The Cuban press system from the perception of its journalistsIn this research, journalists' self-perception about the Cuban mass media system is characterized in order to determine professional flaws that prevent them from successfully performing their social role in a socio-communicative scenario where it is urgent to renovate journalistic practice. From an interdisciplinary approach, and placing this study within the context of the press system, a concept of perception is provided, taking into account the judgments of the journalists as a specialized audience. Journalists are found to perceive the Cuban mass media as a system negatively affected by external and internal mediations, by the application of information policies of external media regulatory institutions, and by the lack of rigor from own media institutions. Journalists perceive themselves as competent professionals committed to the national socio-political system, even though they recognized that Cuban media do not satisfy the main audiences' communicative needs.
