The germination stimulants produced by Arabidopsis thaliana, a host of root parasitic plants Orobanche spp. but not of arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi were examined. Root exudates from the hydroponically grown A. thaliana plants were subjected to reverse phase high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and retention times of germination stimulants inducing O. aegyptiaca seed germination were compared with those of strigolactone standards. In addition, the root exudates were analyzed by using HPLC linked with tandem mass spectrometry (LC/MS/MS). A. thaliana was found to exude at least three different germination stimulants of which one was identified as orobanchol. This is the first report of strigolactone production by a nonmycotrophic plant. These results together with recent knowledge imply that strigolactones have other unrevealed functions in plant growth and development.

Summary Phelipanche and Orobanche species (broomrapes) are root holoparasitic plants that cause severe damage to economically important crops. Phelipanche and Orobanche spp. are widespread in Mediterranean areas, in Asia and in Southern and Eastern Europe, attacking dicotyledonous crops and depending entirely on their hosts for all nutritional requirements. Phelipanche aegyptiaca, Phelipanche ramosa and Orobanche cernua are extremely troublesome weeds on tomatoes. These noxious parasites exert their greatest damage prior to their shoot emergence and flowering; therefore, the majority of field loss may occur before diagnosis of infection. This review summarises the four main control measures for the weedy root parasites Phelipanche and Orobanche in tomato, namely chemical and biological control, resistant varieties and sanitation. Some of these methods are commercially widely used by farmers in Israel (chemical control), some are in the final stages of development towards commercialisation (resistant varieties and sanitation), and some still require further development and improvement before commercial implementation (biological control). The review presents an up‐to‐date summary of the available knowledge on their use for broomrape management in processing tomatoes.

SummaryAllelopathic chemicals released by plants into the rhizosphere have effects on neighboring plants ranging from phytoxicity to inducing organogenesis. The allelopathic activity of naturally occurring quinones and phenols is primarily a function of reactive radicals generated during redox cycling between quinone and hydroquinone states. We isolated cDNAs encoding two distinct quinone oxidoreductases from roots of the parasitic plant Triphysaria treated with the allelopathic quinone 2,6-dimethoxybenzoquinone (DMBQ). TvQR1 is a member of the z-crystallin quinone oxidoreductase family that catalyzes one-electron quinone reductions, generating free radical semiquinones. TvQR2 belongs to a family of detoxifying quinone oxidoreductases that catalyze bivalent redox reactions which avoid the radical intermediate. TvQR1 and TvQR2 message levels are rapidly upregulated in Triphysaria roots as a primary response to treatment with various allelopathic quinones. Inhibition of quinone oxidoreductase enzymatic activity with dicumarol prior to quinone treatment resulted in increased transcript levels. While TvQR2 homologs were upregulated by DMBQ in roots of all plants examined, TvQR1 homologs were upregulated only in roots of parasitic plants. Phylogenetic trees constructed of TvQR1 and TvQR2 protein homologs in Archea, Eubacteria and Eukaryotes indicated that both gene families are ancient, yet the families have dissimilar evolutionary histories in angiosperms. We hypothesize that TvQR2-like proteins function to detoxify allelopathic quinones in the rhizosphere, while TvQR1 has speci®c functions associated with haustorium development in parasitic plants.

These results suggest that SA-induced resistance, but not JA-induced resistance, is effective in inhibiting Orobanche parasitism and that the resistance is expressed by the host root both externally and internally.
