Livers of newborn and 8-day-old mice infectedwith encephalomyocarditis (EMC) virus were examined histologically and electron microscopically. Marked stasis of the portal veins and increased number of red blood cells within hepatic sinusoids were found histologically. Moderate to severe intracellular damage in focal hepatocytes and Kupfïer cells as well as EMC viral crystals were observed electron microscopically. Also important were the findings of Councilman-like bodies and invasion of degenerative cells by blood phagocytes. Thus, an early inflammatory response was noted, which we consider a direct effect of the viral infection itself.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
