Les racines de régénération (ou régénérations) se forment plus rapidement si la zone du pivot
où a lieu l'amputation est encore jeune. Leur orientation initiale s’écarte d'autant plus de la verticale qu’elles naissent dans une zone âgée du pivot. Elles apparaissent en plus grand nombre (jusqu' à 5) si l'amputation a lieu à un niveau où les latérales sont déjà en place. Leur potentiel de croissance est voisin, quoiqu'un peu inférieur, à celui qu'avait le pivot au moment où il a mis en place le niveau où a lieu l’amputation et non au potentiel de croissance actuel de ce dernier. Si l'amputation est pratiquée sur une partie du pivot horizontale, les régénérations qui naissent à la partie inférieure de la section verticale sont plus nombreuses et poussent mieux que celles formées à la partie supérieure de cette section. Les cotylédons favorisent la formation des régénérations. Les racines latérales en cours de formation (amputation proche du sommet du pivot) et les premières régénérations mises en place inhibent la formation et la Croissance des régénérations. Il en va de même du sommet du pivot lors de sections transversales de la moitié de son épaisseur. Les conséquences pratiques de ces résultats sont discutés.
