Alginate hydrogel is a popular biologically inert material that is widely used in 3D bioprinting, especially in extrusion-based printing. However, the printed cells in this hydrogel could not degrade the surrounding alginate gel matrix, causing them to remain in a poorly proliferating and non-differentiating state. Here, we report a novel study of the 3D printing of human corneal epithelial cells (HCECs)/collagen/gelatin/alginate hydrogel incubated with a medium containing sodium citrate to obtain degradation-controllable cell-laden tissue constructs. The 3D-printed hydrogel network with interconnected channels and a macroporous structure was stable and achieved high cell viability (over 90%). By altering the mole ratio of sodium citrate/sodium alginate, the degradation time of the bioprinting constructs can be controlled. Cell proliferation and specific marker protein expression results also revealed that with the help of sodium citrate degradation, the printed HCECs showed a higher proliferation rate and greater cytokeratin 3(CK3) expression, indicating that this newly developed method may help to improve the alginate bioink system for the application of 3D bioprinting in tissue engineering.
Primary PM 2.5 emissions contributed significantly to poor air quality in China. We present an interdisciplinary study to measure the magnitudes of socioeconomic factors in driving primary PM 2.5 emission changes in China between 1997-2010, by using a regional emission inventory as input into an environmentally extended input-output framework and applying structural decomposition analysis. Our results show that China's significant efficiency gains fully offset emissions growth triggered by economic growth and other drivers. Capital formation is the largest final demand category in contributing annual PM 2.5 emissions, but the associated emission level is steadily declining. Exports is the only final demand category that drives emission growth between 1997-2010. The production of exports led to emissions of 638 thousand tonnes of PM 2.5 , half of the EU27 annual total, and six times that of Germany. Embodied emissions in Chinese exports are largely driven by consumption in OECD countries.
Curcumin (CUR), a bioactive component of turmeric, which is a commonly used spice and nutritional supplement, is isolated from the rhizomes of Curcuma longa Linn. (Zingiberaceae). In recent years, the potential pharmacological actions of CUR in inflammatory disorders, cardiovascular disease, cancer, Alzheimer's disease and neurological disorders have been shown. However, the clinical application of CUR is severely limited by its main drawbacks such as instability, low solubility, poor bioavailability and rapid metabolism. Multifarious nanotechnology-based delivery approaches have been used to enhance the oral bioavailability, biological activity or tissue-targeting ability of CUR. This article reviews potential novel drug delivery systems for CUR including liposomes, polymeric nanoparticles, solid lipid nanoparticles, micelles, nanogels, nanosuspensions, nanoemulsions, complexes and dendrimer/dimer, which provide promising results for CUR to improve its biological activities.
Abstract-In this paper we study how to reduce energy consumption in large-scale sensor networks which systematically sample a spatio-temporal field. We begin by formulating a distributed compression problem subject to aggregation (energy) costs to a single sink. We show that the optimal solution is greedy and based on ordering sensors according to their aggregation costs-typically related to proximity-and, perhaps surprisingly, it is independent of the distribution of data sources. Next we consider a simplified hierarchical model for a sensor network including multiple sinks, compressors/aggregation nodes and sensors. Using a reasonable metric for energy cost, we show that the optimal organization of devices is associated with a Johnson-Mehl tessellation induced by their locations. Drawing on techniques from stochastic geometry, we analyze the energy savings that optimal hierarchies provide relative to previously proposed organizations based on proximity, i.e., associated Voronoi tessellations. Our analysis and simulations show that an optimal organization of aggregation/compression can yield 8-28% energy savings depending on the compression ratio.
Intelligent polymeric micelles for antitumor drug delivery and tumor bioimaging have drawn a broad attention because of their reduced systemic toxicity, enhanced efficacy of drugs, and potential application of tumor diagnosis. Herein, we developed a multifunctional polymeric micelle system based on a pH and redox dual-responsive mPEG-P(TPE- co-AEMA) copolymer for stimuli-triggered drug release and aggregation-induced emission (AIE) active imaging. These mPEG-P(TPE- co-AEMA)-based micelles showed excellent biocompatibility and emission property, exhibiting great potential application for cellular imaging. Furthermore, the antitumor drug doxorubicin (DOX) could be encapsulated during self-assembly process with high loading efficiency, and a DOX-loaded micelle system with a size of 68.2 nm and narrow size distribution could be obtained. DOX-loaded micelles demonstrated great tumor suppression ability in vitro, and the dual-responsive triggered intracellular drug release could be further traced. Moreover, DOX-loaded micelles could efficiently accumulate at the tumor site because of enhanced permeability and retention effect and long circulation of micelles. Compared with free DOX, DOX-loaded micelles exhibited better antitumor effect and significantly reduced adverse effects. Given the efficient accumulation targeting to tumor tissue, dual-responsive drug release, and excellent AIE property, this polymeric micelle would be a potential candidate for cancer therapy and diagnosis.
Two important reasons for China's air pollution are the high emission factors (emission per unit of product) of pollution sources and the high emission intensity (emissions per unit of GDP) of the industrial structure. Therefore, a wide variety of policy measures, including both emission abatement technologies and economic adjustment, must be implemented. To support such measures, this study used the production- and consumption-based emissions accounting approaches to simulate the SO2, NOx, PM2.5, and VOC emissions flows among producers and consumers. This study analyzed the emissions and GDP performance of 36 production sectors. The results showed that the equipment, machinery, and devices manufacturing and construction sectors contributed more than 50% of air pollutant emissions, and most of their products were used for capital formation and export. The service sector had the lowest emission intensities, and its output was mainly consumed by households and the government. In China, the emission intensities of production activities triggered by capital formation and export were approximately twice that of the service sector triggered by final consumption expenditure. This study suggests that China should control air pollution using the following strategies: applying end-of-pipe abatement technologies and using cleaner fuels to further decrease the emission factors associated with rural cooking, electricity generation, and the transportation sector; continuing to limit highly emission-intensive but low value-added exports; developing a plan to reduce construction activities; and increasing the proportion of service GDP in the national economy.
