ABSTRACTThis article presents results of the study "Organizational dimensions of violence at work in Chile considering occupational and gender inequalities" (Fondecyt Regular 2014. No. 1140060). It focused on three economic sectors: retail, banking and food processing. For each one, a non-probabilistic sample of three labor actors was selected: workers, managers and leaders, and union leaders. A qualitative methodology based on in-depth interviews was applied. The results indicate that violence at work derives from labor relations characterized by a strong imbalance of power between executives and workers, and by the predominance of authoritarian supervision styles that seek to discipline the labor force. It is part of the concept of "oppressive work regime" Gender violence at work expresses the articulation of two forms of oppression against women: their low formal power in organizations and their low social power derived from gender relations that subordinate and discriminate against them. It manifests itself in greater exposure to ill-treatment associated with occupations of lower status and precarious employment conditions, "macho" attitudes and behaviors, sexual harassment and discrimination associated with motherhood.
ABSTRACTThis article revisits some of the key debates on women's employment in 20 th -century Chile and reviews the range of views extant on the status of women in the labor market and their domestic and caregiving roles. Through much of the early part of the century, the prevailing view regarded women's employment, especially that of poor women, as threatening reproductive capacity. Midway through the century, new voices began to challenge the perceived clash between gainful employment and motherhood by attaching more positive meaning to employment as a chance for women's personal and professional growth. Through the past few decades, the rising diversification and professionalization of women's labor set the stage for increasingly affirmative views linking women's employment to improved opportunities for personal and professional growth, financial independence, and poverty reduction. The debate over women's employment is a prime locus for an examination of the status of women, the division of productive and reproductive labor in each time period, and the role of labor in forging gender identities.
Introduction: In the context of public policies on psychosocial risks in Chile, the need arises to include amongst these violence and bullying at work and obtain valid and reliable instruments for its measurement. Objectives: It is proposed to validate the inventory of Violence and Bullying at Work (IVAPT-Pando) in Chilean workforce; Method: The process consisted of: a) content validation; b) semantic adaptation of the questionnaire and its complementarity with the addition of items designed to measure violence by actors external to the organization; c) final application to a total sample of 700 subjects to analyze the psychometric properties of the instrument; d) elaboration of reference scales; and, e) study of convergent validity with the GHQ. Results: The presence of three components of the original instrument is confirmed, and in the modified instrument emerges a fourth factor on violence by actors outside the organization. Internal consistency and reliability of both versions remain high. The instrument's capacity to discriminate the presence and intensity of violence and harassment in the sectors studied is confirmed. Significant correlations are presented with the presence of psychopathology as measured by the GHQ. Conclusions: The instrument is useful for measuring workplace violence but it should be paid attention to some difficulties in its application.
