LENA adult word count and conversational turn provided reasonably accurate estimates for SDM over the age range tested. Theoretical and practical considerations regarding LENA performance in non-English languages are discussed. Despite the pilot nature and other limitations of the study, results are promising for broader cross-linguistic applications.
Changes in natural language environments of families receiving quantitative language feedback in Shanghai were investigated. Volunteer parents of 22 children aged 5 to 30 months were recruited from a hospital and a learning center. Quantitative measures of adult word count and conversational turns with children were collected regularly over 6 months. Feedback reports to caregivers included individual family plus group counts. Impact was assessed by changes in quantitative measures and pre–post child language assessments. Overall, families increased word/turn counts significantly during the first 3 months and then regressed to baseline levels. However, parents whose word count output was below median at baseline significantly increased word count output to study conclusion. Adult word and turn counts were related to a subset of language development measures. Quantitative feedback with parent training had a significant impact on adult–child interactions, particularly for below-median families. Larger studies of wider socioeconomic status with control groups are needed.
BackgroundNeural-immune-endocrine network mechanism has attracted increased attention in diarrhoea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS-D). Pre-clinical evidence indicates that nerve growth factor (NGF) mediates visceral hypersensitivity and gut barrier dysfunction, via interactions with mast cells and sensory nerve fibres.
AimTo explore the role of nerve growth factor, as well as mast cell-nerve growth factor-nerve interaction in IBS-D pathophysiology.
MethodsIn this cross-sectional study, IBS-D patients and healthy controls first underwent clinical and psychological assessments. Visceral sensitivity to rectal distension was tested. As gut barrier function markers, serum diamine oxidase and D-lactate were detected. Rectosigmoid biopsies were taken for the analyses of nerve growth factor expression, mast cell count and activation, and sensory nerve fibres expressing transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 and calcitonin gene-related peptide. Correlations between these parameters were examined in patients.
ResultsThirty-eight IBS-D patients (28 males, 10 females; average age 30.2 years) and 20 healthy controls (12 males, 8 females; average age 26.8 years) participated in the study. The patients presented increased psychological symptoms, visceral hypersensitivity and impaired gut barrier function. NGF gene expression, mast cell count and sensory nerve fibres were significantly increased in the patients (P < 0.05). In correlation analysis, NGF expression was positively correlated with the disease severity, anxiety and serum diamine oxidase; visceral sensitivity thresholds were negatively associated with NGF expression (Bonferroni corrected P < 0.0029).
ConclusionsElevated mucosal NGF may interact with mast cells and sensory nerve fibres, contributing to visceral hypersensitivity and impaired gut barrier function in IBS-D.
The present study investigated whether more vicarious trial-and-error (VTE) behavior, defined by head movement from one stimulus to another at a choice point during simultaneous discriminations, led to better visual discrimination learning in a Y-maze, and whether VTE behavior was a function of the hippocampus by measuring regional brain cytochrome oxidase (C.O.) activity, an index of neuronal metabolic activity. The results showed that the more VTEs a rat made, the better the rat learned the visual discrimination. Furthermore, both learning and VTE behavior during learning were correlated to C.O. activity in the hippocampus, suggesting that the hippocampus plays a role in VTE behavior during discrimination learning.
Chronic administration of a psychomotor stimulant has been shown to produce progressively enhanced effects, a phenomenon called "reverse tolerance" or sensitization. The present study reexamined the effects of the daily injection of phencyclidine on locomotor activity and stereotypy in rats, and investigated whether drug-environment conditioning was necessary for the development of behavioral sensitization and whether (5R,10S)-(+)-5-methyl-10,11-dihydro-5H-dibenzo[a,b]cyclohepten-5,1 0-imine hydrogen maleate (MK-801, dizocilpine) blocked behavioral sensitization to phencyclidine. Female Sprague-Dawley rats were used. Locomotor activity and stereotypy were measured automatically with the Digiscan system. The results confirmed an earlier finding that four daily injections of phencyclidine induced sensitization to both locomotor activity and stereotypy. The development of behavioral sensitization did not require drug-environment conditioning. Moreover, MK-801 did not block behavioral sensitization to phencyclidine. The results of the present study suggest that the neuronal mechanisms underlying sensitization to phencyclidine are different from those underlying sensitization to amphetamine and cocaine.
