Green innovation has become a critical measure to address the sustainable development challenges of manufacturing industries, and research has largely neglected the important role of managers as decision-makers within firms. Using a sample of China’s listed manufacturing firms from 2009 to 2019, this study explores the impact of market competition and financialization on corporate green innovation and examines the moderating effect of market competition. The main findings are as follows. First, intense market competition may inhibit corporate green innovation in the context of the Chinese market. Second, managers are willing to sacrifice firms’ long-term interests in exchange for profits in the short run. Third, market competition alleviates the negative association between financialization and corporate green innovation, indicating that the interactions between manufacturing firms may alter managers’ preferences for financial investment. In addition, our study explores heterogeneous impacts of market competition and financialization on corporate green innovation, and the empirical results are consistent with our findings in most cases. Our findings provide support for rational resource allocation in green innovation and can be used to guide manufacturing firms to achieve their goals of sustainable development.
Residents’ willingness to cooperate can contribute to the success of urban regeneration projects worldwide. However, limited research has explored factors determining residents’ willingness to cooperate with neighborhood regeneration projects. This study aims to investigate the influence of psychological factors on urban residents’ willingness to comply with neighborhood regeneration projects. To achieve this goal, the study extends the theory of planned behavior by specifying the effects of perceived benefit, perceived risk, and perceived fairness on residents’ compliance intention toward neighborhood regeneration projects. Data from 362 local residents (i.e., homeowners) in China were analyzed using partial least squares structural equation modeling. Results show that perceived benefit, perceived risk, and perceived fairness have significant effects on the attitude, subjective norm, and perceived behavioral control, which in turn enhance residents’ compliance intention toward neighborhood regeneration projects. In addition, perceived benefit and perceived fairness also exhibit direct positive effects on residents’ compliance intention. This study develops an enriched model to examine the forming mechanisms of residents’ compliance intention under the context of neighborhood regeneration. It also provides more insights to enhance the decision-making regarding strategies of urban regeneration toward better social sustainability. Specifically, measures should be implemented to increase residents’ subjective norm, perceived behavioral control, and benefit perception. It is also recommended to foster a favorable attitude and to facilitate fairness perceptions of residents.
Under contract farming, companies usually develop compulsory standardized technical systems for farmers in developing economies. However, in actual production, farmers often have differences in adoption intensity. Using data from 384 households and multinomial endogenous treatment effect regression, this study analyzes factors affecting the adoption intensity of farmers regarding standardized technical systems and estimates the impacts of adoption intensity of the standardized technical systems on household incomes in Chongqing, China. We adapt a multinomial endogenous treatment effect regression framework to correct for selection bias and endogeneity originating from both observed and unobserved heterogeneity. The results show that some factors could significantly affect the adoption intensity, such as farmers, satisfaction with technicians, perception of technology, attitude toward risks of adopting technologies, number of technical trainings, the proportion of leased land, and distances to townships and technology extension stations. Different from current perspectives, the results also indicate that the highest adoption intensity of farmers regarding standardized technical systems does not bring the greatest benefits. Based on the characteristics of a plot, medium adoption intensity has a significant effect on quality improvements and income growth. The conclusion of this study provides an empirical basis for the formulation and evaluation of policies for farmers that apply standardized technology systems in developing countries.
