China has set up ecological protection and high-quality development of the Yellow River Basin as its national strategy. However, the fragile natural ecosystem and intensive human disturbances pose challenges to it. This study evaluates habitat quality change and analyzes its drivers in a representative county of this region, aiming to provide scientific basis for ecological protection and sustainable development. We took Liulin, a representative county of middle Yellow River Basin as the study area and evaluated the spatiotemporal variation of habitat quality from 2000 to 2020 with the InVEST model. Further, the influencing factors of habitat quality pattern were explored using GeoDetector, and their gradient ranges dominating the habitat quality change were determined by gradient analysis. The results showed that: (1) Areas of low and medium-low habitat quality grades were distributed interactively in the whole county; medium grade areas were scattered in the northeast and southwest parts of the county; and medium-high and high grades area were distributed sporadically along the Yellow River and its branches. (2) Habitat quality of the county almost unchanged from 2000 to 2010. However, from 2010 to 2020, with the rapid expansion of construction land (increased by 9.62 times), the area proportion of medium, medium-high, and high habitat quality grades decreased from 7.01% to 5.31%, while that of low and medium-low habitat quality grades increased from 92.99% to 94.69%. (3) The habitat quality was influenced by multiple natural-human factors. The main influencing factor was land use, followed by elevation. (4) Most changes of habitat quality occurred in areas with lower elevation, gentler slope, and higher vegetation coverage, which were affected by intensive human activities. These results suggest that in future land use policy making and, the construction land expansion in Liulin County should be restricted and differentiated ecological protection and restoration strategies should be implemented in areas with different habitat quality.

Urban parks provide important environmental, social, and economic benefits to people and urban areas. The literature demonstrates that proximity to urban parks is one of the key factors influencing people’s willingness to use them. Therefore, the provision of urban parks near residential areas and workplaces is one of the key factors influencing quality of life. This study designed a solution based on the spatial association between urban parks and buildings where people live or work to identify whether people in different buildings have nearby urban parks available for their daily lives. A building density map based on building floor area (BFA) was used to illustrate the spatial distribution of urban parks and five indices were designed to measure the scales, service coverage and potential service loads of urban parks and reveal areas lacking urban park services in an acceptable walking distance. With such solution, we investigated the provision of urban parks in ten districts of Shenzhen in China, which has grown from several small villages to a megacity in only 30 years. The results indicate that the spatial provision of urban parks in Shenzhen is not sufficient since people in about 65% of the buildings cannot access urban parks by walking 10-min. The distribution and service coverage of the existing urban parks is not balanced at the district level. In some districts, the existing urban parks have good numbers of potential users and even have large service loads, while in some districts, the building densities surrounding the existing parks are quite low and at the same time there is no urban parks nearby some high-density areas.

The development of reclaimed mine soils is normally spatially heterogeneous, making the fine management and utilization of reclaimed mined lands difficult. Soil nutrient grading can provide a scientific basis for the precise regulation of soil nutrients, but few related studies are available in reclaimed mined areas. This study aimed to quantify the spatiotemporal variations in soil nutrient grades under different land-use types in a reclaimed mined area on the Loess Plateau, China. The study area was graded by four soil nutrients (soil available potassium (SAK), soil available phosphorus (SAP), soil total nitrogen (STN), and soil organic matter (SOM)), and the variation features of soil nutrient grades in the initial stage of reclamation under four land-use types (i.e., cultivated land, grassland, forestland, and barren land) were systematically characterized by geostatistical analysis, pedodiversity analysis, and correspondence analysis. The results show that during the initial five years after reclamation, the soil nutrient grades of most reclaimed areas increased from Grade V and VI to Grade I–IV, while the improvements were significantly heterogeneous. Notably, the four land-use types had distinct variation characteristics. The barren land had the lowest SAP level, whereas it had the highest proportion, and medium–high grades of SAK, STN, and SOM (88.3, 100.0, and 100.0%, respectively). In terms of quantitative structure, it had the lowest richness index (S′, 2.5) and Shannon’s entropy index (H′, 0.7) and the highest evenness index (E′, 0.8). These results suggest that the barren land had relatively high and balanced nutrients, with the highest homogeneity among the four land-use types. The grassland had considerable improvement in all nutrients (especially SAP; 95.6% of the area had high SAP grades); however, its improvement was the most heterogeneous (S′ = 4.5, E′ = 0.7). As the second-most heterogeneous land-use type (S′ = 4.0, E′ = 0.8), the forestland had relatively low STN, SAP, and SAK levels due to high nutrient uptake and storage by tree species, but it had the highest proportion of area that reached high SOM grades (36.4%) and medium to high SOM grades (100.0%) due to its high community productivity. The cultivated land, which received fertilization for an additional three years, was the most imbalanced in terms of nutrients. It had the highest proportion of area that reached high SAP grades (98.0%); in contrast, its area proportions of low-grade SAK and SOM (69.0 and 32.9%, respectively) were the highest among the four land-use types. Based on the above comprehensive characterization of soil nutrient grade variation, guidance was given for fine management of reclaimed mined land and the optimization of reclamation measures.
