Auf ihrer Hinterindien-Expedition 1936-37 war es dem Forseherehepaar Hans Adolf und Emmy BERNATZIK als erste gelungen, die primitivste noch lebende Völkergruppe, die wir kennen, die Phi Tong Luang, zu untersuchen. In den folgenden Ausführungen geht es um die Klassifizierung der Sprache der Phi Tong Luang unter dem Gesichtspunkt der Zuverlässigkeit der Nachrichtenübermittlung und um den Vergleich in dieser Hinsicht mit den Sprachen des sinoaustrischen Raumes. Wir kommen zu dem Ergebnis, daß die Phi Tong Luang-Sprache, wie die Sprachen des sino-austrischen Raumes, auf der Ebene des Satzes hohen Informationsfluß anstrebt. Um die Zuverlässigkeit der Nachrichtenübermittlung nicht zu gefährden, muß deshalb durch Anpassungshilfen auf der Ebene des Wortes dem Empfänger die Zeichenanpassung erleichtert werden.
Auf ihrer Hinterindien-Expedition 1936-37 war es dem ForseherehepaarHans Adolf und Emmy BERNATZIK als erste gelungen, die primitivste noch lebende Völkergruppe, die wir kennen, die Phi Tong Luang, zu untersuchen. 1 Bei diesem in den Urwäldern des Gebirgszuges zwischen Mekong und Menam in Nord-Thailand und Nord-Laos lebenden Volk soll es sieh um letzte Reste eines protomongolischen Volkes handeln, das wahrscheinlich in mesolithischen Epochen über Südostasien verstreut gelebt hat. Phi Tong Luang, "Geister der gelben Blätter", werden diese Menschen von den Thai-Völkern genannt, wäh-rend sie sich selbst jumbri "Waldmenschen" (jum "Mensch", bri "Wald") nennen; Geister der gelben Blätter deshalb, weil sie keine andere Spur als ihre verdorrten Windschirme zurücklassen, die nach dem Glauben ihrer Nachbarn nur von Geistern errichtet worden sein können.BERNATZIK kommt zu dem Ergebnis: "Die Phi Tong Luang sind unter den lebenden Völkern die reinsten Vertreter der Träger einer vermutlich vorneolithischen Holz-oder Bambuskultur und einer eigenen Rasse. Sie sind eben im Begriff unter Überspringung der jüngeren Menschheitsepochen, direkt auf die Eisenzeit überzugehen". 2 1962 und 1963 unternahm die Siam Society zwei Expeditionen zur Erforschung der Phi Tong Luang. 3 In Nord-Thailand wurde ein Volk angetroffen, das sich mrabri "Waldmenschen" (mra "Mensch") nannte * Dieser Text ist die geringfügig geänderte Fassung des Vortrages, der am 26.
