Foulkes had maintained that besides Trigant Burrow, plays by Gorki: At the Bottom (1902) and Pirandello: Six Characters in Search of an Author (1921), had inspired him to group analysis 15 years before his first group in Exeter. An analysis of the plays under dramatic and group analytic perspectives tries to investigate the possible influential factors that might have inspired Foulkes. By expanding the neuroscientific and psychosocial ontological dimension of group analysis into the ontology of art, it is suggested that such an intuitive approach can be fruitful in understanding group processes, as is shown by a vignette of an adolescent group, opening up new dimensions for interrelational thinking and intersubjetivity.
In this unpublished 18 page letter to his friend Wilfred D. Abse, the late Foulkes offers new autobiographical information about his intense relationship to theatre in his early years. He makes a final attempt to clarify the contribution of Trigant Burrow to the history of group analysis in comparison to his own. In the letter he indicates a kind of estrangement from the London group analytic scenery. He conceives this letter as a summary of his late group analytic conceptualizations.
The author focuses on observed clinical material of interplay between the large group and small groups in a training situation. Cross border interplay have seldom been described: specific material from a large group setting is brought up in the context of another, the small group, or vice versa. These phenomena need to be conceptualized. The author makes use of Freud’s and Mario Erdheim’s concept of the antagonism between family and civilization, developing a conceptualization from Erdheim’s interpretation of adolescence as a dynamic factor of progress in civilization. The interplay between the small and large group is seen as a re-staging of the adolescent process. After applying this concept to the described material, the implications and consequences for group-analytic interpretation are discussed.
Schermer's well-informed interview with Jonathan Moreno about the book he wrote on his father, full of insight, yields a deep view into the manifold personality and huge fields of creative interest, which Moreno pioneered. It leaves no doubt about his charismatic role as the principal inspirer in the field of non-analytic group therapy. Even his influence on group-analysis is vital (Hamer, 1990). Concerning the Tavistock Group, Moreno lectured at the Tavistock Clinic for several months in 1945in , Harrison (2000 writes:The theories of Lewin and Moreno provided the intellectual basis for the Tavistock Group's particular brand of systems theory, and provided the techniques of experimentation and enquiry.
