SummaryThis research examines demographic diversity between mentors and proteges on international internships. Using a sample of 138 interns on six-month overseas assignments, the results indicate that interns who are dierent in nationality and gender from their mentors are much less likely to receive task-related, social-related, and career-related support from them. Moreover, this de®cit in mentoring is associated with poorer socialization to internship assignments, lower levels of learning about international business, lower likelihoods of receiving and accepting job oers from internship employers, and lower perceived career instrumentality of the internships. The implications of the results for future research on mentor±protege diversity and the design of international internships are discussed as well.
We report on the results of optical, X-ray and NMR studies of light-induced phenomena in smectic phases triggered by molecular phototransformations.UV irradiation causes trans-to-cis isomerization of the dopant molecules while irradiation in thc visible part of the spectrum facilitates cis-to-trans relaxation. Cis-to-trans isomerization decreaws the smectic layers' spacing; as the result, a smectic slab undergoes an undulation instability and/or formation of focal conic domains. These textures arc nonuniform and scatter light; this effect can be used for optical data storage. The opposite trans-to-cis isomerization disorders the orientation of molecules and increases the thickness of smectic layers. Two beams of different wavelengths with distinct yields of isomerisation can be used to write and erase optical information.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
