The experiment compared counselor structured (CS) and group structured (GS) counseling groups with a control group. The groups were equal in ability and initial grade point averages. Results indicated that those Ss in the CS groups had a significantly greater rate of change in G.P.A. after counseling than the Ss in either the GS or control groups. The GS groups rate of change was greater than the controls after counseling. Three months following counseling the CS groups rate of change was significantly greater than the controls, but not greater than the GS groups. It was concluded that a CS group experience can have both an immediate and a delayed, even if somewhat limited, effect on academic achievement with male college underachievers.
