Measurements from industrial processes are often serially correlated. The impact of this correlation on the performance of the cumulative sum and exponentially weighted moving average charting techniques is investigated in this paper. It is shown that serious errors concerning the “state of statistical process control” may result if the correlation structure of the observations is not taken into account. The use of time series methods for coping with serially correlated observations is outlined. Paper basis weight measurements are used to illustrate the time series methodology.
The present paper reviews the research literature on trust in bargaining and mediation. Several models of trust within the bargaining process are also described. It is concluded that trust means different things, depending upon the relationship under investigation. Trust among negotiators can refer to a personality trail (how trusting a negotiator is of others) or to a temporary state. Within the state perspective, trust often refers to one of three orientations: (1) cooperative motivational orientation (MO), (2) patterns of predictable behavior, (3) a problem‐solving orientation. Trust between a negotiator and constituents usually refers to a cooperative MO (i.e., shared loyalty) between these two groups. The addition of a mediator can impact both the opposing negotiators' relationship and each negotiator‐constituent relationship; the mediator also has direct and indirect relationships with the parties and their constituents. Future directions for research on trust are identified.
Purpose -The purpose of the present paper is to describe managerial and US legal issues associated with using social networking web sites (SNWs) such as Facebook for personnel selection. Managers must consider the benefits and concerns that using such information presents.Design/methodology/approach -The paper identifies issues based on the academic literature, theoretical concepts, and current managerial and legal developments as reported in the popular and business press.Findings -Using SNWs to screen applicants offers benefits to organizations in the form of gaining a large amount of information about applicants, which may be used to supplement other information (e.g. a resume). It may also help a firm address ''negligent hiring'' legal concerns. However, other legal considerations as well as issues pertaining to information accuracy, privacy, and justice argue against using such information.Research limitations/implications -Throughout the paper, topics are raised which may guide future research.Practical implications -By recognizing both the advantages and disadvantages of using SNW information for applicant screening, managers can make an informed decision as to whether they wish to use this screening method; if so, managers can devise policies that provide the firm with appropriate information while respecting applicant privacy, and complying with US legal and ethical expectations.Originality/value -While much has been written about SNWs, little has been written from an academic perspective on the advantages and disadvantages of accessing applicants' SNWs. The present paper reviews the literature from a variety of disciplines and identifies important issues for researchers and managers.
With modern surgical techniques to repair retinal detachments, a greater than 90% primary anatomic success rate can be expected. [1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9] Despite this high level of anatomic success, visual results remain compromised mainly because of permanent functional damage once the macula becomes detached. 10 The most important predictor of visual recovery after retinal detachment surgery is preoperative visual acuity. 8,9,11,12 Preoperative acuity appears to be directly related to the height of macular detachment. 13 Shorter duration of detachment and younger age are also important in visual recovery. This paper will review the current literature that helps to improve our understanding of visual recovery after macula-off retinal detachments.
This study investigated how the content of social networking Web site (SNW) pages influenced others' evaluation of job candidates. Students (N = 148) evaluated the suitability of hypothetical candidates for an entry-level managerial job. A 2 x 4 design was employed: résumés were either marginally qualified or well qualified for the job. SNW printouts reflected (a) an emphasis on drinking alcohol, (b) a family orientation, or (c) a professional orientation; participants in a control group received no Web page information. In addition to a main effect for résumé quality, applicants with either a family-oriented or a professional-oriented SNW were seen as more suitable for the job and more conscientious than applicants with alcohol-oriented SNW pages. They were more likely to be interviewed. If hired, they were also likely to be offered significantly higher starting salaries. Results are discussed in terms of implications for both managers and applicants.
Visual recovery after successful surgery for the macula-off rhegmatogenous retinal detachment continues to be an important topic for ophthalmologists. Recent studies have shown that despite the intuitive notion regarding outcomes in macula-off detachment, there is no improvement in final visual acuity despite more expedient repair within the first week. Macula-off detachments can therefore be treated with less urgency and can wait for the next scheduled available operating room time. Surgeons involved in retinal detachment surgery should be aware that visual function based on acuity testing may continue to improve in the long term, most notably in those with the following patient characteristics: younger age, no or mild myopia (less than -5.00 D), and shorter duration of macular detachment (30 days or less).
