One of the main contemporary challenges in the field of computers and education is to provide gamified educational systems tailored according to the students' gamer types to be most effective than traditional counter-tailored gamified educational systems in terms of students' learning aspects. In order to start to solve this problem, we proposed an approach to tailor gamified educational systems based on the students' gamer types. An instance of the proposed approach was implemented and an empirical experiment with 121 elementary students was conducted in order to comparatively evaluate the tailored and the counter-tailored versions of the system in terms of students' concentration and flow experience. The main results indicate that for some gamer types the tailored system was more effective, however, in some cases, the flow experience and concentration was larger in the counter-tailored version of the system, surprising and contradicting the expectation of recent theoretical studies and making room for further studies in this field. A second empirical experiment was conducted in order to identify which are the most suitable gamification element for each gamer type, allowing us to provide a guideline for tailor gamified educational systems based on students' gamer types.
This paper presents an experience report about the course Educational Electronic Games offered to high school students of the School for Excellence in Middle Teaching Deolinda Amaral situated in the City of Lajedo-PE. The following objectives of this research, we tried to promote the use of digital games for a better utilization of the content covered in class, introduce basic knowledge of programming logic and foster teamwork. Games were used in the course in order to assist students who are preparing to enter a university. It also held a competition among the students to develop the best game. And at the end of the project, it was found that there was an increased frequency in use of the laboratory for educational purposes. It is suggested that other initiatives are made based on practices presented in this work.
Flow Theory has been increasingly applied to Computers and Education to address several topics within this field (e.g., motivation, engagement, learning performance and so on). At the same time, in comparison with other recent theories related to Computers and Education, (e.g., Self-Determination Theory, S-Curve Theory, Intrinsic motivation, etc.), is a young topic, with different open research questions. Additionally, the Computers and Education community still lacks a comprehensive understanding of how Flow Theory is used in the area. Thus, this paper presents a Systematic Literature Review aiming to identify how students' flow state are measured during learning activities, how such activities are designed, which are the flow models used in Computers and Education and which are the main benefits of being in the flow state for the students. The main findings of this work are: (1) there is positive evidence about the benefits of applying Flow Theory in Computers and Education, especially, for increasing students’ learning, to generate students’ satisfaction, and to enable exploratory behavior; (2) the majority of studies use questionnaires to manual identify students’ flow state; (3) a great diversity of flow state scales have been used; (4) the majority of studies are not designing activities for leading students to the flow state, and (5) the Csikszentmihalyi’ flow model is more used. Finally, we conclude this work by showing some promising and interesting research opportunities that are underexplored in current research and practice.
Game Virtualization is a process of digital versions creation for traditional/physical games. In education, this process aims to create digital versions for traditional/ physical educational games, keeping psychological and pedagogical concepts from traditional version, as well as associate these concepts to contemporary game design elements. In this sense, this paper presents five challenges for Game Virtualization Applied to Educational Games: (i) design of methodologies for educational games virtualization, (i.i) design of methodologies for educational game evaluation, (i.ii) recommendation of resources for Educational Games Virtualization, (ii) multidisciplinary of Educational Games Virtualization, and (iii) professional training to Educational Games Virtualization.
Abstract. Flow Theory has been discussed in several aspects
