A set of 114 recombinant inbred lines of the 'International Triticeae Mapping Initiative' mapping population was grown during the seasons 1997, 1998, 1999 and 2000 under several environments. Twenty morphological (glume colour, awn colour, waxiness, leaf erectness, peduncle length), agronomical (ear emergence time, flowering time, grain filling time, ear length, plant height, lodging, grain number, thousand-grain-weight, grain weight per ear, grain protein content, winter hardiness) and disease resistance (powdery mildew, yellow rust, leaf rust, fusarium) traits were studied. Not all traits were scored in each experiment. In total 210 QTLs with a LOD threshold of >2.0 (minor QTLs) were detected of which 64 reached a LOD score of >3.0 (major QTLs). Often QTLs were detected in comparable positions in different experiments. Homologous and homoeologous relationships of the detected QTLs, and already described major genes or QTLs determining the same traits in wheat or other Triticeae members, are discussed.
Reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD), also known as complex regional pain syndrome type I (CRPS I), is a disabling neuropathic pain syndrome. Controversy exists about the effectiveness of therapeutic interventions for the management of RSD/CRPS I. In order to ascertain appropriate therapies we conducted a review of existing randomized controlled trials of therapies for this disabling disease. Eligible trials were identified from the Cochrane, Pubmed, Embase and MEDLINE databases from 1966 through June 2000, from references in retrieved reports and from references in review articles. Twenty-six studies concerning treatment modalities were identified. Eighteen studies were randomized placebo-controlled trials and eight studies were randomized active-controlled trials. Three independent investigators reviewed articles for inclusion criteria using a 15-item checklist. Seventeen of the trials were of high quality according to the 15-item criteria. There was limited evidence for the effectiveness of these interventions because of the heterogeneity of treatment modalities. The search for trials concerning prevention of RSD/CRPS I resulted in two eligible studies. Both were of high quality and dealt with different interventions. There is limited evidence for their preventive effect.
The economic value of wheat grain is determined by the kernel morphology which is an important parameter for manufacturing different food products requiring specific grain characteristics. Although kernel size and shape have emerged as important breeding objectives, not much information is available about the number or location of associated gene(s)/quantitative trait loci. In the present study, a recombinant inbred line population of 106 plants (F 7 ) was phenotyped for four traits, namely kernel length, width, weight and factor form density (FFD) and genotyped with different polymerase chain reaction-based markers. Transgressive segregants were observed for all the traits and genetic correlation studies showed positive correlations between the majority of the traits. The number of markers associated with each trait ranged from two to nine and the phenotypic contribution by an individual marker ranged from 3.3 to 16.6%. Many of the markers showed linkage to more than one trait. Strategies for improving the wheat grain quality traits and the utility of such markers in marker-assisted selection (MAS) efforts are discussed.
For daughter groups of 15 test bulls, controls of paternity were performed by using blood group factors and biochemical polymorphisms. Data of incorrectly assigned daughters influenced the estimation of breeding values, heritabilities and correlations for milk performance traits. Formulae are given that show the effects of variable misidentification rates on estimation of breeding values, selection intensities, heritabilities, and genetic gains. For example, for milk fat yield, the genetic gains drop at a misidentification rate of 15% between 8.7% (for h2 = .5) and 16.9% (for h2 = .2) below values attained without misidentifications. Consequently, decreasing misidentification rates in progeny of test bulls can be used to diminish the progeny size per test bull for constant genetic gain, to achieve more precise ranking of all or distinct test bulls according to their "true" breeding values and(or) to increase the number of test bulls by using the same amount of test inseminations and the same precision of ranking. Actions to reduce misidentification rates in cattle populations are discussed.
This experiment was set up to test the hypothesis that confrontation with feared movements would lead to symptom-specific muscular reactivity in chronic low back pain patients who report high fear of movement/(re)injury. Thirty-one chronic low back pain patients were asked to watch a neutral nature documentary, followed by a fear-eliciting video-presentation, while surface electromyography (EMG) recordings were made from the lower paraspinal and the tibialis anterior muscles. It was further hypothesized that negative affectivity (NA) would moderate the effects of fear on symptom-specific muscular reactivity, as well as the effects of muscular reactivity on pain report. The results were partly as predicted. Unexpectedly, paraspinal EMG-readings decreased during video-exposure but this decrement tended to be less in fearful patients than in the non-fearful patients. Negative affectivity did not moderate this effect, but moderated the effect of pain-related fear on muscular reactivity of lower leg muscles. In addition, NA directly predicted muscular reactivity in the right tibialis anterior muscle. As predicted, there was a significant covariation between left paralumbar muscular activity and pain report. This association was moderated by NA, but in the opposite direction. The findings extend the symptom-specificity model of psychophysiological reactivity, and support the idea that pain-related fear perpetuates pain and pain disability through muscular reactivity.
Overall, the data show huge variation of germination and establishment among natural accessions of A. thaliana and might serve as a valuable source for further germination and plasticity studies.
