This paper is the result of research on the contemporary diversity of socio-spatial structures in medium-sized cities in the coastal zone of Poland (Pomerania), using the cities of Lębork, Szczecinek and Wałcz as case studies. The main focus of the research is on demographic changes and population movement and on an increase in the spatial segregation of certain social groups which seems to result from the latter changes, particularly of the unemployed and the impoverished. The research also discusses social problems and changes in the quality of life which may be connected with the preceding changes. An attempt is made to encapsulate some of the main features of the new socio-spatial patterns which have emerged over the last two decades in a model of medium sized towns in this region.

Zarys treści. Głównym celem artykułu jest próba zdefiniowania pojęcia "miasto podwójne" jako formy osadniczej oraz uporządkowanie terminologii stosowanej w odniesieniu do tej grupy miast. Miasta podwójne, to jednostki powstałe w wyniku administracyjnego połączenia dwóch miast. W dosłownym rozumieniu są to miasta złożone z dwóch elementów składowych o miejskim rodowodzie. W szerszym ujęciu miasta podwójne mogą składać się z większej liczby elementów składowych, z których dwa powinny być jednostkami osadniczymi o miejskim rodowodzie. W artykule dokonano typologii miast podwójnych w nawiązaniu do okresu powstania formy (typologia historyczna), stopnia zintegrowania części składowych (typologia przestrzenna), charakteru formy przestrzennej, relacji występujących między osiedlami miasta oraz układu funkcjonalnego.Słowa kluczowe: miasta podwójne, miasta-zlepieńce, zmiany administracyjne miast, Polska. Chabot stwierdził, że "współczesne miasto przybiera tak różne postacie i ma tak niewyraźne granice, że nie można dać jednej, ogólnej defi nicji obejmującej wszystkie miasta" (Kiełczewska-Zaleska, 1972, s. 109). Odnosi się to też do układu przestrzennego miasta, na który wpływa szereg często indywidualnych czynników, takich jak położenie miasta, warunki naturalne w jego otoczeniu, okres powstania miasta, pełnione funkcje czy procesy kształtujące przestrzeń miejską od momentu powstania miasta (Słodczyk, 2001). Różno-rodność ta wyraża się w stwierdzeniu, że "nie ma dwóch takich samych miast" (np. Nawrot, 2011, s. 299).Można zatem mówić o unikatowości miast, dlatego każde miasto należy traktować indywidualnie, co znacznie utrudnia wszelkie porównania i uogól-nienia. The recent productions of social history include, among others, the staging of those ephemeral gatherings known as conventions. As one of the pioneers in this important mode of circulation and communication, the United States offers an apt case study of conventioneering's ascent and locational flux. The paper begins by defining a convention; it then (1) examines the selection of convention sites; (2) documents the surge in convention activity; (3) describes cross‐sectional changes (1964–1965 to 1990–1991) in the spatial patterns of convention attendance in the United States: and (4) explores the implications of these patterns for students of social change and American metropolitan evolution. The pronounced shift from older metropolises in the Northeast and Midwest to peripheral cities in the South and West may be interpreted more nearly as a response to site‐specific amenities promising pleasure and fun than to a place's position in the urban hierarchy. Staging conventions is part and parcel of the emerging Post‐modern City. The conjecture is that conventions may be satisfying social needs for specialized segments of the population as well as functioning as a communication medium sui generis.
