BackgroundMicroRNAs (miRNAs) play an important role in the development and progression of breast cancer (BC). The purpose of the present study was to identify plasma miRNAs enabling early diagnosis of BC.Materials and MethodsExpression levels of seven plasma miRNAs (miR‐23a‐3p, miR‐29b‐2‐5p, miR‐130a‐5p, miR‐144‐3p, miR‐148a‐3p, miR‐152‐3p, and miR‐182‐5p) in 106 patients with newly diagnosed BC and 96 healthy participants were analyzed by qRT‐PCR. We also evaluated the relationship between the expression levels of these miRNAs and clinicopathological features of patients with BC.ResultsCompared with healthy controls, we found that miR‐23a‐3p (p = .025), miR‐130a‐5p (p = .006), miR‐144‐3p (p = .040), miR‐148a‐3p (p = .023), and miR‐152‐3p (p = .019) were downregulated in the plasma of patients with BC. MiR‐130a‐5p, miR‐144‐3p, and miR‐152‐3p were downexpressed in BC tissues as well as plasma. The expression of the miR‐23a‐3p, miR‐144‐3p, and miR‐152‐3p was related to ER positive and PR positive. Besides, miR‐23a‐3p, miR‐144‐3p, and miR‐152‐3p did show the significant difference in the staging compromised to the control, especially in stage I‐II. Moreover, we also found that miR‐144‐3p and miR‐148a‐3p were associated with lymph node invasion.ConclusionsThe expression levels of the miR‐23a‐3p, miR‐130a‐5p, miR‐144‐3p, miR‐148a‐3p, and miR‐152‐3p were lower in patients with BC compared to healthy controls and were associated with ex hormone receptor, clinical stage, and lymph node metastasis, indicating the diagnostic potential of these miRNAs in BC.

To evaluate the aetiological agents and epidemiologic features of severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) in Hubei province, China, sera from patients were collected from January to December 2011. All cases occurred from April to December, and the epidemic peaked from May to August. The ages of patients ranged from 10 to 86 years (median=55years), and the incidence of SFTS increased with age. The female:male ratio of cases was 1.008:1, and 54.6% (77/141) and 1.4% (2/141) of the cases were confirmed by qPCR to be SFTSV and Hantavirus (HV) infection, respectively. No case of simultaneous infection with two or more pathogens was found. The research in this paper showed that some suspected SFTS cases are confused with HV infection due to similar symptoms. The analysis showed that the distribution of SFTSV has a marked regional aggregation in Hubei province.

We selected 13 tag single nucleotide polymorphisms (tSNPs) to investigate whether they were associated with breast cancer risk in the Chinese Han population. Upon statistical analyses of clinical data from 551 patients and 577 controls, we found that six of the 13 SNPs were associated with breast cancer; namely, rs4973768(Odds ratio (OR) = 1.30, 95% confidence interval (CI) =1.01-1.67), rs981782(OR =1.30, 95% CI=1.01-1.66), rs1432679(OR =0.84, 95% CI=0.70-0.99), rs10759243(OR=1.30, 95%CI=1.09-1.55), rs10822013(OR =1.18, 95% CI=1.00-1.39) and rs704010(OR =1.63, 95% CI=1.04-2.56). When stratified based on breast cancer subtype, our analyses revealed that three SNPs (rs981782, rs10759243 and rs704010) correlated with ER+ breast cancer, while another three (rs4973768, rs1432679 and rs10822013) correlated with ER- breast cancer. We obtained similar results while investigating the correlation of SNPs with PR status or clinical stage. Our results suggest that associations identified between SNPs and breast cancer through genome-wide association studies (GWAS) may not always be generalizable across races.
