Abstract.A user interface (UI) is one of the most significant parts of an information system (IS). A user-friendly UI helps users to carry out their tasks with efficiency, effectiveness, and satisfaction. UI consists of five elements: metaphor, mental model, navigation, interaction, and appearance. Based on these, the designer must carefully select and design each element to be appropriate for the users. This research examines the influential process named user-centered design (UCD), a well-known process to raise product quality. Furthermore, the roles UI elements in IS development by observing it in a small family software services company in Thailand. The findings of this study show small family team is proper with UI design that concern in usability for user. Even though some UCD processes or UI elements are quite unclear, the clan culture helps team to design UI with flexibility, and unbiassed obtain comments from user.
This paper examines EIS development in Thailand. Thailand is a newly industrialised country, typical of other developing countries. First, the paper discusses the nature of the Thai economic and political systems. Four case studies are explored to examine how EIS are developed and to explore the influence of the economic and political environment on EIS development. Only one of the four systems examined can be considered highly successful. The factors behind EIS success and failure in a developing country are discussed. The paper concludes by suggesting that to develop an EIS successfully in a developing country and evolutionary approach with strong user participation should be followed. It is also suggested that outsourcing EIS development to foreign consultants is unlikely to be successful.
This study investigates communication competences of Thai IT software developers whose works relate to software development practices. The results show that, two communication competence groups, Cognitive Complexity and Giving Task Information have relation to almost every practice, except metric practice. The other three groups, Low Individualism and Emotional Control, Oral and Written Reporting, and Receiving Utilizing Information also influence on some of the practices. The research results suggest both software industry and academic to concern human factors. However, these findings are limited to Thai IT Professionals.
