Abstract: This chapter presents the theory of Genetic Algorithm applied to the automatic tuning of the parameters of a Fuzzy Logic speed controller for electric drives, in the presence of load variation. The complexity of the speed controller and its non-linear characteristics leaded to the tuning of 16 parameters. In order to apply load to the motor, it was coupled to a generator connected to a resistor bank, which was switched on and o through a single IGBT. The terminal voltage of the generator depends on the motor speed, which changed signicantly during the tuning process, increasing the diculty level of adjusting the controller parameters. Within this context, the use of Genetic Algorithm was carried out on-line without any human aid. The results showed its capability to nd the optimum solution, according to the criteria and search space previously dened for the problem.
