Vielfach bat auch die Anschaunng Anklang gefiinden, da13 der Eingriff des Stickstoffs erst bei einem hoheren Gliede der Kohlenhydrat-Reihe stattfande oder auch auf eine Urnsetzung des Ammoniaks init Sauren, wie niederen Oxysiiuren '), zuriickzufiihren sei. Keiner dieser Anscbauungen dienten irgendwelche geoauereii experimentellen Befunde als Stiitzen. Wahrend man uber die Form, i n der der Stickstoff der Luft und der anorganisch gebundene des Rodens in assimilntionsfiihige Verbindungen, wie Nitrate und Animoniak, ubergeht, ungefahr Klarheit bat gewinnen konnen, sind wir iiber die zweite Kardinalfrage, wie der anorganisch gebundene Stick-StcJff in die organiscb gebundene Form ubergebt, bisher auf Vermu-dcn Versuclien von H a a s (Bio. Z. 46, 296 [1912]) ist im Tierkbrpcr z. B. Glyoxylsiiura niclit als Durchgangsstufe bei der Bildung des Glykokolls anzusehen. C. r. 126, 616 [1898] u. a. a. 0. . Bio. Z. 20, 136 [1909]. 44. giinge viillig wertlos. Z. B. habe ich bei der Nachprufung des B e rt helotschen Versuches iiber die Fixierung des Stickstoffs durch AIkoholl) unter dem EinfluB der Entladung, bei dem B e r t h e l o t die Eotstehung von Verbindungen der Zusaminensetzung [C, €I (OH)NHa]2nus den Gasanalysen gefolgert Lnt, gefunden, dal3 das Reaktionsprodukt der Hauptsache nach aus a m e i s e n s a u r e i n A m m o n i u m untl €1 e x a m e t h y l e u -t e t r a m i n besteht. Es war deshalb niitig, bei der Bearbeitung dieses Gebietes Y O U Anfang anzufangen und den IIauptwert der Untersuchung auf den cLemischeo Nachweis drr entstebenden Stoffe zu legeo, ohne die Gasanalysen ala Ersatz eioer cheniischeo Untersuchung der Reaktionsprodukte gelten z u Iassen. Nachdem ich in fruheren Versuchen?) in BestHtigung alterer Aogaben gelunden hatte, daB feuchter Stickstoff bereits Aiumoniak liefert, bei allen meinen Persuchen aber das Wasser nls integrierender Bestandteil hinzugezogen wurde, konnte ich die esperinientelle Aufgabe dahin vereinfachen, daB als s t i c k s t o f f h a l t i g e K o m p o n e n t e stets f e u c h t e s A m m o n i a k gewiihlt wurde.Durch riieine Versuche iiber das Verbalten der feuchten Kohlpn-
itersuchungen iiber die Spaltung des Traubenzuckers unter dem Einflufl oxydierender und reduzierender Agenzien machten es wnnschenswert , auch das kathodische und anodische Verhalten des Zuckers und einiger ihm nahestehender Substanzen bei der Elektrolyse kennen zu lernen. Obgleich mehrere Arbeiten hierober ausgefnhrt sind, ist der Gegenstand noch keineswegs erschopfend behandelt. Die grofle Empfindlichkeit des Zuckermolekiils ist die Veranlassung, dafl sich die Resultate mit wechselnden Versuchsbedingungen durchaus verandern. So erhielt R e n a r d 1) bei der Elektrolyse einer schwefelsauren Traubenzuckerlbsung Ameisensaure, Zuckersaure und Trioxymethylen ; Br ownz) Kohlenoxyd, Kohlensaure, Acetaldehyd, AmeisensWre, Essigsaure; Berthelot3) gibt an, Alkohol beobachtet zu haben; G l a d s t o n e und T r i be4) wiesen eine Jodoform liefernde Substanz nach: MaumenCs) erwahnt die Bildung von Milchsaure. Neben diesen Oxydationswirkungen kann der Strom, wie O ' B r i e n Gunna) zeigte, in schwefelsaurer Lbsung auch starke Reduktionswirkungen hervorrufen und die reichliche Bildung von Mannit veranlassen. Vor kurzem hat schliefllich Neuberg7) die Elektrolyse des Traubenzuckers in rein wasseriger Losung ohne Diaphragma ausgefohrt und die Entstehung des d-Glukosons wahrscheinlich gemacht. I. Das anodische Verhalten des Traubenzuckers in schwefelsaurer LBsung. Unterwirft man eine Losung von Traubenzucker in verdiinnter Schwefelsaure unter Vermeidung von Temperaturerhahung an einer Bleianode der Einwirkung des elektrischen Stromes, so verlauft die Elektrolyse in Gegenwart eines Ueberschusses an Traubenzucker nahezu ohne anodische Gasentwicklung, die bei Wahl entsprechender Stromverhaltnisse nberhaupt erst nach langerer Durchfnhrung des Versuches in sehr geringem Umfang auftritt. Trioxyglutarsaure, Glukonsaure bezw. Zuckersaure. Andere Produkte, wie Glyzerinaldehyd , Dioxyaceton , Milchsaure lassen sich nicht nachweisen. Von den moglichen Auffassungert. tber die Entstehung dieser Produkte ist die folgende gewghlt:

Sodann batten K a u ffm a n n und H o f 6) bei der elektrolytischen Reduction des m-Nitrobensaldehydes den m-Azobenzylalkohol in geh g e r Menge oeben der m-AzobenzoGsiiure, dem Hauptproduct, erbdten. Eine zufiillige Wiederholung dieses Vereoches gab die Veranlaseung ZIJ der vorliegenden Untemochung. D e r m-Nitrobenzaldehyd liefert bei der Behandlung mit Alkalien ein Molekiil m-Nitrobenzylalkohol und ein Molekiil m-NitrobenzoCsbore. Es museten demnacb bei glatter elektrolytischer Reduction in gleicben Theilen m-Arobenrylalkohol und m-Azobenzo8skure sich bilden. Die Ausbeute an ersterem iet aber immer verachnindend klein, die an *re eehr p a r , ein Verhalten, s e k h e s K a u f f m a n n uud Hof a m der Unbea-digkeit dee ~n-Nitrob~nrylalkoboles in Alkalien zu erk h r e n mcbeo.
