Durch Temperung von Bayerit oder Böhmit bei Temperaturen zwischen 200 und 1200° C werden Aluminiumoxydpräparate hergestellt. Diese werden mit Hilfe der in der vorangehenden Mitteilung beschriebenen, einfach und schnell durchführbaren Kupferchloridmethode untersucht. Hierbei werden Aussagen über Oberflächenbasizität und Oberflächengröße der Aluminiumoxyde erhalten. Die bei der thermischen Behandlung auftretenden Phasenumwandlungen können mit dieser Methode erfaßt werden.
Die auf die Einheit der Oberfläche bezogene Oberflächenbasizität — gemessen an der Fällung von Cu2(OH)3Cl — ist eine Funktion der „Aktivierungs”︁‐Temperatur. Sie ist bei den γ‐Oxyden aus Bayerit etwa ebenso groß wie bei denen aus Böhmit und steigt bis zum 1000°‐Oxyd stetig an.
Die physikalische Adsorption von CuCl2 gestattet eine Angabe der Oberflächengröße von Aluminiumoxyden. Sie erstreckt sich nicht nur auf γ‐Al2O3, sondern auch auf γ‐AlOOH. Die gewonnenen Ergebnisse stimmen gut mit denen anderer Methoden (Gasadsorption, Emaniervermögen) überein.
Auch alkalihaltige Aluminiumoxyde können mit der Kupferchloridmethode charakterisiert werden.
Bei der Einwirkung von Kupferchloridlösung auf reines γ‐Aluminiumoxyd entsteht das basische Salz Cu2(OH)3Cl. Die Abscheidung dieses Salzes läßt sich zerlegen in eine „Sofortreaktion”︁, bedingt durch die am γ‐Oxyd vorhandenen Oberflächenhydroxyl‐gruppen, und in eine mit der Zeit fortschreitende Folgereaktion auf Grund der Rehydratation des γ‐Aluminiumoxyds. Neben dieser chemischen Umsetzung findet eine physikalische Adsorption äquivalenter Mengen von Cu2−‐ und Cl−‐Ionen statt. Diese Adsorption entspricht der LANGMUIR‐Isotherme.
Zahlreiche Kationen können durch physikalische Adsorption in der Aluminiumoxydsäule voneinander getrennt werden. Die entstehenden Zonen lassen sich auseinanderwaschen, so daß sie durch unbelegte Zwischenräume getrennt sind. Das Verfahren entspricht im wesentlichen der chromatographischen Trennung organischer Molekeln. Voraussetzung für die Anwendbarkeit des Verfahrens ist, daß das Aluminiumoxyd mit den betreffenden Kationen keine chemische Umsetzung (Fällungschromatographie) gibt.
Verschiedene Kationen, die von einer basischen oder neutralen Aluminiumoxydsäule ausgefällt werden, können dann durch physikalische Adsorption getrennt werden, wenn man der Säule ihre basischen Eigenschaften nimmt.
Beispiele für derartige Trennungen – Na/K; Na/Rb; Mn/Cd; K/Cd; Na/Mn/Cd; Ni/Cd; Ni/Mn; Hg/Ni – werden angegeben. Dabei wurde der Trenneffekt meist mit Hilfe von Leitfähigkeitsmessungen beobachtet.
