1. Aul3er den gewOhnlichen LichtbOgen mit kathodischem Brennfleck gibt es auch BOgen ohne kathodischen ]3rennfleck. Sie treten bei groBer Belastung auf, wenn die Kathode auf hohe Tempgratur kommt. --2. Lichtb6gen ohne Brennfleck sind im Xenon mit ldeineren Str6men als in Quecksilber und bei Gleichstrom mit kleineren Stromst/~rken als bei Wechselstrom zu erhalten. --3. Der Obergang yon einem Brennfleckbogen ZU einem brennflecklosen Bogen erfolgt als pl6tzlicher Umschlag. --4. Der Umschlag yore Brennfleckbogen zu brennflecklosem Bogen erfolgt bei gr6Berer Stromst~irke als der Rtickumschlag. Man beobachtet also eine Hysteresiserscheinung, welche bei Xenon ausgeprggter als bei Quecksilber 'ist. --5. Die Wiederztindspitze bei Wechselstrom tritt zusammen mit dem kathodischen ]3rennfleck auf. Ihre Ursache liegt zum Teil in dem Raum unmittelbar vor der Kathode und sie mu/3 durch denselben l~r erkl~irt werden, wie der ]3rennfleck selbst.An der Kathode eines Lichtbogens ist gew6hnlich ein sog. Brennfleck zu beobachten. Die Bogens~tule schn(irt sich dicht vor der Kathode stark zusammen ulld setzt an ihr in einem sehr hellen Punkt an. In vergr613erter Projektion erkennt man vor der Elektrode eine ungef/ihr kugelf6rmige Zone, die die normale Bogens/iute an Leuchtdichte bedeutend fibertrifft und die ohne sichtbaren Zwischenraum auf der Kathode aufsitzt. Solche ausgesprochenen Brennflecke treten besonders bei fliissigem Quecksilber, niedrig schmelzenden Metallen, wie Kupfer und an kfinstlich gekfihlten Kathoden auf. Vielfach bewegen sie. sich auf der Kathode mit erheblicher Geschwindigkeit hin und her. Die/ittere thermische Bogentheorie, wie auch die Feldemissionstheorie haben der Erscheinung des Brennflecks wenig Beachtung geschenkt und gerieten in Widerspruch mit der hohen Stromdichte, welche in ibm herrscht, und seiner leichten Beweglichkeit auf tier Kathodenoberfl~Lche. Seitdem die Kontraktionstheorie Ell den Stromtransport zur Bogenkathode und den niedfigen Kathodenfall der Lichtb6gen gerade durch die Brennfleckbildung erkl~irt, ist es wichtig festzustellen, ob Brennfiecke eine allgemeine Eigenschaft der Lichtb6gen sind oder ob es auch Lichtb6gen ohne kathodische Brennflecke gibt.
Dutch eine Erweiterung und Verfeinerung der Kontraktionstheorie des Kathodenfalls eines Lichtbogens finden folgende experimentelle Tatsaehe~ eine ]grkl{irulag: 1. An sehwer verdampfbaren Elektroden kOnnen LichtbOgen mit kathodischem Brennfleck und Lichtb6gen ohne Brennfieck auf*reten. --2. Der brennflecklose Bogen erfordert eine hohe Kathodentemperatur und ist ein thermischer Bogen. 3. Die beidefl B0genformen gehen in einem pl6tzlichen Umschlag ineinander fiber. --4. Der Umschlag des Brennfleekbogens in den brennfieckfreien /3ogen erfolgt bei hOherer Stromst~trke als der Rfickumschlag (Hysterese). --5. Brennflecklose B6gen sind ill Xenon unter sonst gleichen Bedingungen bei kleineren Str6men m6glich als in Quecksilber. --6. Die Hysteresis ist in Xenon ausgepr~Lgter als in Queeksilber. --7-Bei gleiehem Strom ffihrt der 13rennfleckbogen der Kathode weniger Energie zu als der brennfleckfreie Bogen. --8. Unter sonst gleiehen Bedingungen tritt der brennfleckfreie Bogen bei Gleichstrom schon bei kleineren Str6men auf als bei Wechselstrom. --9. Die Wiederzfindspitze bei Wechselstrom verschwindet bei B6gen kleiner LSonge immer gleichzeitig mit dem Brennfleck an der betreffenden ~Etektrode.
