A crystal of A1203 (V) has been studied in absorption over the wavelength range 0.4-1.2 p. Measurements have been made at 4.2, 20 and 77"K, and polarization spectra obtained in the visible region. Two absorption bands have been resolved into finer structure than has been previously reported, and one of the components has been further split by a magnetic field. The relevant crystal field theory for two d-electrons in a trigonal field has been developed, using an octahedral field to provide a preliminary classification of states. The main features of the spectra are discussed in terms of this theory and possible complications due to Jahn-Teller distortions are considered.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
