Insertable microelectrode arrays can be used to activate neurons or to sense neural signals for use in prosthetics. The relationship of the microelectrodes to the neurons is determined by random alignment and by biocompatibility. Issues that determine the biocompatibility of insertable microelectrode arrays were investigated. Arrays were implanted into the cortex of rabbit brain and fixed to the skull. Following six-month survival, neuron density as a function of distance from the shafts of the arrays was measured to assess destruction of neurons. Results from a limited number of tests indicated that there was minimal tissue response along the sides of the shafts when shafts were well sharpened, had sufficiently small tip angles, and were clean. Tissue was usually more reactive at the tips of the shafts. It was concluded that silicon microshafts of appropriate shaft and tip design were biocompatible along the sides of the shaft, but that relatively severe reactions could be anticipated at the tips. Recording or stimulation sites should be located away from the tips on the sides of the shafts for better coupling with individual neurons. Measurement of neuron density as a function of distance from the shafts was a sensitive and quantitative technique for assessing biocompatibility. Additional measures such as glial density as a function of distance from the shafts, and incidence of microhematoma formation were proposed.
The purpose of this study was to fabricate chitosan/poly(vinyl alcohol)/Ag nanoparticles (CPA) gels with microwave-assistance for skin applications. Microwave irradiation was employed to reduce silver ions to silver nanoparticles and to crosslink chitosan (CS) with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). The presence of silver nanoparticles in CPA gels matrix was examined using UV-Vis spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction. The interaction of CS and PVA was analysed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The release of silver ions was determined by atomic absorption spectrometry. The antimicrobial properties of CPA gels againstP. aeruginosaandS. aureuswere investigated using agar diffusion method. Finally, the biocompatibility and wound-healing ability of the gels were studied using fibroblast cells (in vitro) and mice models (in vivo). In conclusion, the results showed that CPA gels were successfully fabricated using microwave irradiation method. These gels can be applied to heal an open wound thanks to their antibacterial activity and biocompatibility.
In this study, electrospun polycaprolactone membrane coated with chitosan-silver nanoparticles (CsAg), electrospun polycaprolactone/chitosan/Ag nanoparticles, was fabricated by immersing the plasma-treated electrospun polycaprolactone membrane in the CsAg gel. The plasma modification of electrospun polycaprolactone membrane prior to CsAg coating was tested by methylene blue stain and scanning electron microscope. The presence of silver and chitosan on the plasma-treated electrospun polycaprolactone membrane was confirmed by energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and FT-IR spectrum. Scanning electron microscope observation was employed to observe the morphology of the membranes. The release of Ag ions from electrospun polycaprolactone/chitosan/Ag nanoparticles membrane was tested using atomic absorption spectrometry. Electrospun polycaprolactone/chitosan/Ag nanoparticles membrane inherited advantages from both CsAg gel and electrospun polycaprolactone membrane such as: increasing biocompatibility, mechanical strength, and antibacterial activity against both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. Thus, this investigation introduces a highly potential membrane that can increase the efficacy of the wound dressing process.
Epilepsy is a medical term which indicates a common neurological disorder characterized by seizures, because of abnormal neuronal activity. This leads to unconsciousness or even a convulsion. The possible etiologies should be evaluated and treated. Therefore, it is necessary to concentrate not only on finding out efficient treatment methods, but also on developing algorithm to support diagnosis. Currently, there are a number of algorithms, especially nonlinear algorithms. However, those algorithms have some difficulties one of which is the impact of noise on the results. In this paper, in addition to the use of fractal dimension as a principal tool to diagnose epilepsy, the combination between ICA algorithm and averaging filter at the preprocessing step leads to some positive results. The combination which improved the fractal algorithm become robust with noise on EEG signals. As a result, we can see clearly fractal properties in preictal and ictal period so as to epileptic diagnosis.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
