Thalassemia is one of the most challenging form of Haematological disorders. Gandhakadi Yoga is an Ayurvedic medicine comprising of SHUDDHA GANDHAKA (Sulphur), VIDANGA (Embelia ribes Burm.f.), AGASTYA PATRA (Sesbaniya grandifoliya Linn.), SHIGRU PATRA (Moringa Oleifera Lam.). Gandhakadi Yoga is a customized preparation of the formulation proposed for Loha Sevanajanya Vikara Prashamana (iron overloading) in Ayurveda Prakasha. here in Gandhaka and Vidanga are triturated with Agatsya patra Swarasa and then used therapeutically. So in the present study the formulation Gandhakadi Yoga has been selected for clinical evaluation on patients of Thalassemia Major, against the standard conventional approach (i.e. Blood Transfusion & Iron chelation therapy). The Pharmacognostical features of Gandhakadi Yoga Vati under the microscope observed that Oil globules, stone cell and Epicarp cells of Vidanga (Embelia ribesBur m.f.), Fragmented Unicellular Cell of Shigru, Simple Fiber of Shigru, Simple Trichome of Bhringraja base of Bhringaraja (E.alba.) and Crystaline depositions of Gandhaka were microscopically. Organoleptic features of finished product were within the normal range described in the classic.
Introduction: stability study of Modified Musta- Triphaladi Avaleha was done for 12 months (1 year) to know the stability of formulation in reference of its phyto-constituents and microbial growth therein. Modi-fied Musta-Triphaladi Avaleha have been used in Thalassemia children as an adjuvant therapy prepared with various herbal product. Methods: Modified Musta-Triphaladi Avaleha was made in Pharmacy with standard classical method (Avaleha Kalpana) as per AFI part-1 (The Ayurvedic formulary of India, part-1 part- A) In present study, stability with respect to its Microbial profile of Modified Musta-Triphaladi Ava-leha carried out. Avaleha was stored in 2 plastic containers during different climatic condition. Avaleha were studied at regular intervals for a period of 1 month to analysis Mycological findings and presence of Microorganisms by wet mount preparation and Gram stain test respectively. Results: At the end of study both Avaleha container has not present of microbes after 1 year of preparation, even in different climate and temperature. Conclusion: Since it is traditional Avaleha kalpana, the shelf life period was about one year (Sharangdhar Samhita) The presented study reflects that Microbiological findings of Modified Musta-Triphaladi Avaleha was negative at room temperature, warm and cold, dry and humid condition.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO) Thalassemia is the most prevalent genetic blood disorder in the world. Thalassemic patients are suffering from hypochromic, microcytic anemia due to the early excessive destruction of red blood cells. Due to the complications and incompleteness of modern medical management of the disease, need arises of some adjuvant therapy like Ayurveda. Hence present study was carried out to standardize the finished product of Musta-triphaladi Avaleha, an Ayurveda formulation which is used in the management of Thalassemia Major, to conform its identity, quality and purity. The finished product was used for the pharmacognostical study; organoleptic characteristics and microscopical study of the Musta-triphaladi Avaleha by showing characteristic features of hat all ingredients used were genuine and all were found in the finished product too. Physico-Chemical Parameters of Musta-Triphaladi Avaleha were found as pH value 6.0, ash value 0.142 g and Acid insoluble ash was 0.193 % w/wÂ
Thalassemia Major is the most common single gene disorder which represents a major health burden worldwide. The available treatment modalities in conventional medicine i.e. blood transfusion (BT) and iron chelation therapies are associated with complications while bone marrow transplantation etc. are out of reach of many. Present study is aimed to highlight the effective role of Ayurvedic medicines i.e. Dhatri Avaleha, Triphaladi Avaleha and Musta-Triphaladi Avaleha in the management of Thalassemia Major. Till date total five clinical researches have been carried out on Thalassemia Major at PG level in the department of Kaumarbhritya at IPGT&RA, Jamnagar. In which a simple random sampling method was followed. Patients were divided into two groups, Group A (Trial group with Ayurvedic drug intervention and BT) and Group B (Control Group with BT and iron chelation therapy). Assessment was done based on the subjective and objective parameters after completion of treatment. The data obtained in clinical studies was analyzed by using suitable statistical tests. The trial drugs were found to be effective on subjective, objective criteria, BT interval and general health status of Thalassemic patients as well as clinically safe.
