The use of shearing during pregnancy has been described as a tool for improving productivity in sheep and for minimizing perinatal mortality in lambs through the increase of fetal development. This study assessed the effect of shearing around 74 days of gestation on the productive performance of ewes and lambs during the first month of life. Forty Corriedale ewes were inseminated in autumn in Southern Brazil. All ewes were kept together at the same pasture under extensive husbandry conditions. The ewes were randomly separated into two treatment groups: twenty animals were completely sheared at 74 ± 6 days of pregnancy, and twenty were kept without sheared during pregnancy, composing the control group. Ewes and their lambs were evaluated at three different times during the experiment: at birth, between 15 and 21 days post-partum and between 22 and 45 days post-partum. Ewes had their body condition score, body weight, placental weight, milk production and serum concentrations of beta-hydroxybutyrate measured, while lambs had hematocrit, hemoglobin, and plasma lactate and glucose, as well as body weight at birth and until wean determined. Values of hematocrit and hemoglobin were lower and body weight at birth and at wean was higher in the group of lambs born from sheared ewes. Placenta weight was higher in sheared ewes. Body condition score and beta-hydroxybutyrate showed no differences between groups. Milk production of sheared ewes (1.26 L/day) was higher than in control group (0.93 L/day). Shearing ewes at 74 days of pregnancy was efficient for the better development of lambs at post-birth, reducing perinatal mortality rates. RESUMO:O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar os níveis de colesterol e betahidroxibutirato sérico em vacas leiteiras com hipocalcemia subclínica. Para isso foram utilizadas 14 vacas leiteiras da raça Holandesa no período de transição. O experimento foi dividido em duas etapas, onde na primeira os animais foram acompanhados quanto ao pH urinário no pré-parto e os níveis de cálcio sérico nos três primeiros dias pós-parto. Na segunda etapa, os animais foram divididos em dois grupos a partir dos níveis de cálcio sérico até as 24 horas pós-parto, sendo: G1: (n=6) animais com cálcio sérico acima de 8 mg/dL e G2 (n=8) animais com cálcio sérico inferior a 8 mg/dL. Foram avaliados os níveis de colesterol sérico no segundo e décimo dias pós-parto e os níveis de beta-hidroxibutirato sérico no décimo dia pós-parto. Observou-se uma redução nos valores de colesterol sérico tanto no segundo como no décimo dia pós-parto e um aumento nos níveis de beta-hidroxibutirato sérico no G2 quando comparado ao G1. Assim, pode-se concluir que a hipocalcemia subclínica afeta negativamente o metabolismo energético, isto demonstrado pela redução dos valores de colesterol sérico e elevação dos níveis séricos de betahidroxibutirato Palavras-chave: balanço energético, cetose, período de transição; insulina ABSTRACT: ABSTRACT: The objective of this study was to evaluate the levels of serum cholesterol and beta-hydroxybutyrate in dairy cows with subclinical hypocalcemia. For this, 14 dairy Holstein cows were used in the period of transition. The experiment was divided into two phases where the first animals were monitored as to urine pH during antepartum and serum calcium levels in the first three days postpartum. In the second stage, the animals were divided into two groups based on the levels of serum calcium until 24 hours postpartum, with: G1 (n = 6) animals with serum calcium above 8 mg/dL and G2 (n = 8) animals less than 8 mg/dL serum calcium. Levels of serum cholesterol in the second and tenth days postpartum and levels of serum beta-hydroxybutyrate were evaluated on the tenth day postpartum. We observed a reduction in serum cholesterol values of both the second and the tenth day after delivery and an increase in serum levels of beta-hydroxybutyrate in G2 in comparison with G1. Thus, it can be concluded that subclinical hypocalcemia adversely affects the energy metabolism, that demonstrated by decreased levels of serum cholesterol and elevated serum levels of beta-hydroxybutyrate.
