Desde os anos de 1990, políticas públicas voltadas para a agricultura familiar têm sido executadas, em linha com uma agenda de desenvolvimento social e economicamente inclusivo e sustentável. Entre elas, destaca-se o Programa de Aquisição de Alimentos (PAA), voltado para a comercialização institucional de alimentos produzidos por agricultores familiares, resultando em aumento da renda dos beneficiários, redução da fome, garantia de comercialização, dinamização do mercado local, valorização da cultura alimentar e redução da migração rural-urbana. Neste trabalho são analisados os principais resultados da implementação do PAA no Vale do Ribeira paulista, de 2010 a 2016, em termos da renda obtida, habitação, produção, segurança alimentar, grau de organização política e permanência dos agricultores no campo, além das dificuldades operacionais. Essa política assumiu importância estratégica para mitigar as condições de vulnerabilidade socioeconômica nessa região, tendo em vista os benefícios proporcionados aos agricultores familiares em várias dimensões.
Os Estados partes do Mercado Comum do Sul (Mercosul) compõem um grupo de nações que apresentam um baixo nível de desenvolvimento, consequências do processo de colonização e da inserção internacional periférica. O Mercosul, embora inicialmente criado apenas com objetivos comerciais, despontou como uma alternativa para a promoção do desenvolvimento na região através de novas iniciativas de políticas públicas, dentre as quais aquelas vinculadas à agricultura familiar. Diante de um cenário dominado pela produção latifundiária e monocultora, a produção agrária familiar apresenta diversas preocupações na região. A Reunião Especializada sobre Agricultura Familiar do Mercosul (REAF), tornou-se um espaço de debates no que tange à essas questões. Assim, o presente trabalho apresenta reflexões iniciais sobre políticas diferenciadas para a agricultura familiar desenvolvidas pela REAF
