Com base na legislação educacional e nos relatórios e mensagens dos presidentes do estado de Minas Gerais (1906-1927), o presente artigo discute a fiscalização do trabalho docente ou a tentativa por parte do estado de realizá-la. Entretanto, tal análise consistiu, por um lado, em considerar o magistério como uma profissão que exigia um código específico de direitos e deveres do professor e, por outro, em reconhecer que tais estratégias utilizadas pelo estado tencionavam fazer do professor um agente da Modernidade. Em linhas gerais, as medidas estipuladas para a docência tentavam garantir a ação adequada do professor, prescrita nos programas de ensino e na legislação. Assim, para atender a diferentes interesses, o professor estava sujeito a diferentes normas e penalidades.
Este artigo apresenta alguns deveres específicos, propostos pelo governo do Estado de Minas Gerais para o professor da escola primária no período de 1906 a 1927, a fim de torná-lo um agente de produção e reprodução de pressupostos de modernidade e progresso. Para efeito analítico, os deveres docentes foram agregados em três categorias - higienistas, nacionalistas e pedagógicas -,a partir da legislação e de mensagens dos presidentes do Estado. Em suma, dois aspectos foram constatados. De um lado, o Estado para ser moderno viu-se obrigado a incluir uma organização racional e hierárquica do ensino e da carreira docente, e, do outro, a valer-se de estratégias de controle do trabalho docente, ainda que, quase sempre, esbarrasse nas resistências dos sujeitos que participavam do cotidiano escolar.
