Purpose The purpose of this paper is to comprehensively review the vast literature on sustainable supply chain management (SSCM), with the specific objective of a thematic exploration of the literature in order to explicate the principal facets of SSCM development. Design/methodology/approach This comprehensive review follows the systematic literature review approach. Findings The authors find SSCM to develop around five principal facets. The first facet is adoption, which accounts for the development of preparatory grounds – for facilitating the generation of a SSCM philosophy to gradually seep into the frame of traditional supply chain management (SCM). The second facet of implementation accounts for the manifestation of a SSCM-oriented transformation for producing gradual upgrades in the traditional SCM environment. The third facet of extension signifies the broadening of the scope of implementation at a more wider (supply chain) level. The fourth facet of maintenance outlines the need for ensuring the continuity of progress in the course of SSCM development. The fifth facet of outcomes focuses on the yields of SSCM’s pursuit. Originality/value These principal facets are built across the multiple levels and unique conceptual standpoints as propagated by 13 themes and 34 sub-themes. These themes are generated based upon 419 articles (2000-2017) from more than 40 leading journals. The authors discuss the facet-specific key implications for guiding the literature in its further advancement, and thus propose a rigorous thematic landscape of the SSCM literature with a unique approach. Overall, the outcomes of this review provide a fundamental organization of the SSCM literature – from the perspective of a journey involved in the transition from traditional to sustainable supply chains.
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to delve into the intricate depths surrounding the development of sustainable supply chains by conceptualizing the elemental aspects of superior performance in sustainable supply chain management (SSCM). Design/methodology/approach The paper is conceptual in nature and is grounded in the theories of SSCM and knowledge-based view. Findings The findings outline the elemental background processes governing the implementation of SSCM practices and superior performance outcomes. The conceptualization suggests that the superior performance of a sustainable supply chain is elementally dependent on the intricate efforts – to enrich the supply chain knowledge base with perspectives on SSCM. Thereby, these intricate efforts are delineated along the arcs of supply chain leadership, supply chain learning orientation, supply chain knowledge management (SCKM) and supply chain knowledge transfer. As such, while an SSCM orientation within the supply chain leadership is helpful in offsetting the inertia among the supply chain members to channelize intricate efforts in SSCM, the SSCM-based supply chain learning orientation further orientates the SSCM efforts of supply chain members toward the excavation of new knowledge in the frame of SSCM. Subsequently, the arcs of SSCM-based SCKM and SSCM-based supply chain knowledge transfer characterize the finer spaces of knowledge excavating actions, essential for enriching the supply chain knowledge base with perspectives on SSCM. Originality/value This conceptualization facilitates intriguing theoretical explanations to the linkage between SSCM implementation and superior performance outcomes. Specifically, from the knowledge-based angle, it delineates the root causes governing the superior/inferior nature of SSCM outcomes.
This paper focuses on the product-harm oriented brand crisis situation from the perspective of food safety scandal. Food safety scandals cause the deterioration of consumer confidence and thereby affect consumer food choices. However, there exists a lack of studies that examine the consumer response to a brand involved in a food safety scandal. The main research questions addressed are (a) to explicate a detailed mechanism of the consumer response towards a brand involved in food safety scandal and (b) what prompts a consumer to trust the faulty brand again.Further, this study presents empirical contextualization from a real brand-specific food safety scandal, the 2015 monosodium glutamate scandal of Nestlé Maggi noodles in India. The study is based on 308 Indian consumers and employs structural equation modeling to analyze the data.The results show that the emotional attachment with the brand forms the basis of the restoration of brand trust by enhancing the authenticity perception of the brand among consumers. This, in turn, forms the basis for the enhancement of healthiness perception of ingredients in order to restore the purchase intention and mitigate blame attribution among consumers. The results are further analyzed from the brand perspective to outline critical implications toward food brand crisis management. This study is among the initial studies to focus on the aftermath of food safety scandals from the brand and consumer perspective. (Zou & Li, 2016). In this paper, we focus upon the specific brand crisis wherein the product is found to be dangerous and/or defective (Dawar & Lei, 2009). Commonly referred to as the productharm crisis situation, a great need is often felt to understand the consumer evaluations towards a faulty brand (Gao, Knight, Zhang, & Mather, 2013). This understanding is especially helpful in guiding crisis management and risk analysis (Dutta & Pullig, 2011). Further, in this paper, we seek an empirical contextualization of the product-harm crisis situation in the food industry.As recurring events in the food industry, food safety scandals trigger overwhelming reactions towards food safety (see Bánáti, 2011). the finer nature of the crisis management approach to be undertaken by the faulty brand. As such, only Falkheimer and Heide (2015) present grained empirical insights on crisis management. Apart from rectifying the flaws erupted in the scandal, the authors further outline the significance of denial and blame shifting towards suppliers as an important intrinsic aspect to govern the redemption. In order to address these concerns, we develop an exploratory framework for the evaluation of the consumer response to a brand involved in food safety scandal.We further seek an empirical contextualization from the 2015 monosodium glutamate (MSG) scandal of Nestlé Maggi noodles inIndia.
