BARREIROS 7 * RESUMOO objetivo do estudo foi conhecer a prevalência de problemas odontológicos em equinos oriundos do Norte Pioneiro do Paraná. Foram avaliadas 55 cavidades orais de equinos da raça Quarto de Milha ou mestiços, machos e fêmeas. Os exames odontológicos foram realizados através da inspeção e palpação da cavidade oral dos animais previamente sedados. Os resultados obtidos foram descritos em odontogramas individuais e analisados por regressão logística (P<0,05). As alterações de maior ocorrência foram as pontas excessivas de esmalte dentário (98,1%), caninos longos (43,6%), lesões em região vestibular (36,3%) e presença do primeiro pré-molar (29,0%). A ocorrência de caninos longos, presença do primeiro pré-molar e demais afecções em pré-molares e molares foram influenciadas pela idade (P≤0,05). Animais utilizados em doma apresentaram maior frequência da presença do primeiro pré-molar (P=0,003), enquanto animais utilizados para prática esportiva de tambor e laço apresentaram maior ocorrência de caninos longos (P=0,004). Em conclusão, a avaliação odontológica periódica é considerada necessária, independentemente da idade e da utilização do animal.

This study aimed to evaluate copper sulfate solutions at 5% and 10% concentrations in footbaths from three dairy farms (A, B and C) with free stall and compost barn production systems, located in the municipality of Arapoti, Parana, Brazil. Farms A, B and C were composed of 537, 88 and 208 lactating cows, respectively, all conditioned to the use of a footbath. Every seven days, before and after the passage of each batch of cows through the footbath, samples of the solution were collected for the evaluation of pH, temperature, and the volume of the solution measured. Farms A and C had higher pH alkalinization due to the greater number of batch passages, from the third batch onwards, and also a reduction in the volume of the solution. It is concluded that the volume varied both with the number of animals that passed through the footbath and with the deposition of organic matter in the solution. The concentration of 10% copper sulfate solution was not able to inhibit pH changes. Furthermore, there was no standardization in the dimensions of the footbaths on the farms.

The American Tegumentary Leishmaniasis (ATL) occurs in several parts of the world, in Brazil and also in the State of Parana, it is a disease of great importance in public health, since it affects animals and humans, with a zoonotic character. Leishmaniasis is found in two forms, tegumentary and visceral, and has sandflies as vectors and wild animals and domestic dogs as reservoirs. ATL is considered an endemic disease in the city of Bandeirantes, with human cases occurring in several urban and rural locations, mainly in areas close to forest remnants, peri-urban and peripheral areas, where vulnerable populations live in general, and with precarious basic sanitation conditions. In these regions also live the participants of the wagon driver project, who own several working horses. The project provides guidance on management, good practices, disease prevention, and animal welfare. Since the role of horses as reservoirs and in the chain of transmission of ATL is not well known, the aim of this study was to carry out a serological study of ATL in horses and in the contact dogs of the participants of the " wagon driver" project, at UENP-CLM, to evaluate seropositivity in these species. Blood samples were collected from 20 horses and 12 contact dogs. A serological study, using the ELISAi test for ATL diagnosis, was carried out on the horses and dogs in relation to this study population, to assess seropositivity. In the serological survey, eight horses out of 20 animals (40%) and four dogs out of 12 animals (33.33%) were seropositive, a result considered significant, indicating the presence of the disease and the risk of transmission where they live. The occurrence of human cases and the presence of ATL vectors have already been identified in several locations in the city. Due to the lack of knowledge about the disease and the difficulty in controlling the vectors, health education is necessary in order to provide the population with orientation on how to prevent the disease, as well as entomological surveillance and new serological studies in areas at risk for ATL transmission. The results indicate that there may be importance in the role of horses as reservoirs and in the transmission of Tegumentary Leishmaniasis, which still needs to be clarified.

Seven forelimb hooves from healthy horses were submitted to regular trimming and fourteen days later, submitted to toe trimming. Toe angle and length, lateral and medial heels, frog and sole length and width, distal, proximal, and metacarpal phalangeal interphalangeal angles were measured, as well as locomotion evaluation through cinematographic analysis. The measurements were performed ten, 14, 15, 30 and 45 days after the regular trimming, and at 14 days two measurements, one before and one after the toe trimming, were carried out. For cinematography, the sequence of supports and time spent in each support were taken. The comparison of the means obtained from the individuals regarding the variables, between limbs, limbs for each individual, time - points, moments for each individual and between limbs for each moment, as well as the time spent in each in the supports, was performed using ANOVA. Results lower than those of statistical significance (p<0.05) were submitted to Tukey’s test. The toe trimming promotes changes in toe length, angle, lateral heel angle, medial and lateral heel length, frog length, width, and sole length, and changes the pattern of the trot of horses.

Com a evolução da seleção genética em bovinos leiteiros a partir do século XX, o desenvolvimento de glândula mamária, aumento da capacidade digestiva e respiratória começaram a ser selecionados em vacas leiteiras, com um consequente acréscimo de peso corporal e de capacidade produtiva. Esta seleção não teve a correspondência para qualidade dos cascos e membros, a fim de suportarem um maior peso e também as condições desfavoráveis do confinamento para a qualidade do casco. Com isso, problemas relacionados aos membros dos bovinos adquiriram importância crescente na bovinocultura. O presente trabalho teve o objetivo de apresentar dados sobre a prevalência de afecções podais e graus de claudicação de vacas em lactação da raça Jersey, mantidas em sistemas de confinamento “free-stall”. Foram avaliados 40 animais, entre eles 20 primíparas e 20 multíparas, em lactação, na cidade de Carambeí - Paraná. Primeiramente foi realizada a análise do escore de claudicação individual, e após foi realizado o exame clínico específico com o intuito de verificar a presença de lesões. Nas vacas primíparas foram observadas, 256 lesões podais (a média 12,8 lesões/vaca) e  as lesões prevalentes foram: erosão de talão, erosão axial e doença de linha branca. Por outro lado, em vacas multíparas, a média de lesões/vaca foi de 15,3 e as lesões prevalentes foram: erosão de talão, erosão axial e úlcera de sola. Todos os animais apresentaram lesões podais, mas somente 33% apresentaram claudicação. Dentre as vacas primíparas, 10% apresentaram certo grau de claudicação, já em vacas multíparas, 55% dos animais claudicavam.
