RESUMO -Foi avaliada por intermédio da simulação a produtividade e eficiência de sistemas de criação de bovinos de corte no Rio Grande do Sul diferindo na idade das novilhas ao primeiro parto (IP, anos) e na taxa de natalidade (TN): "Sistema Tradicional" (ST) IP=4; "Sistema Melhorado" (SM) IP=3; e o "Sistema Um Ano" (SU) IP=2. Em cada sistema foi avaliado o efeito da TN variando entre 50 e 90%. Foi usado um modelo estático determinístico. A resposta em produtividade e eficiência à redução na IP foi dependente da TN. No SM e SU foi determinada resposta curvilinear a aumentos na TN, atingindo uma produção máxima de 83,9 e 77,9 quilos de bezerro desmamado (BD)/ha com TN de 82,5 e 92,3%, respectivamente. No ST a resposta foi linear, com aumentos de 6,1 kg BD/ha a cada 10% de aumento na TN. In each system it was studied the effect of CR varying from 50 to 90%. A statistic deterministic model was used. The effect of reducing CA on productivity and efficiency was dependent of CR. IS and OYS showed a quadratic response curve, with maximum production of 83,9 and 77,9 kg of weaned calf (WC)/ ha for CR of 82,5 and 92,3%, respectively. TS response was linear, with increments of 6,1 kg WC/ha for each 10% increase in CR. Energetic cost per quilogram of WC was reduced linearly with increments in CR.Key Words: biological efficiency, beef herd, productivity, simulation, systems Rev. bras. zootec., 30(4):1278-1286, 2001Introdução O aumento da produtividade da pecuária de corte no Estado do Rio Grande do Sul tem sido colocado como uma alternativa de melhoria do resultado econômico das empresas dedicadas à atividade (PÖTTER et al., 1998; FRIES e ALBUQUERQUE, 1999). Esse processo passa pela melhoria dos indicadores de reprodução e produção do rebanho, congregando mudanças no nível tecnológico incorporado aos sistemas de produção, principalmente manejo alimentar e sanitário dos rebanhos, no melhoramento genético e a adequação de biotipos ao ambiente produtivo (LOBATO, 1995).Pesquisas têm sido desenvolvidas no Rio Grande do Sul com o objetivo de identificar fatores determinantes do aumento da taxa de natalidade (GOTTSCHALL e LOBATO, 1996; SIMEONE e LOBATO, 1996; QUADROS e LOBATO, 1997) e da redução da idade das fêmas ao primeiro parto (BERETTA e LOBATO, 1996; ROCHA, 1997; PEREIRA NETTO e LOBATO, 1998). Um modelo estático determinístico, com base em resultados de pesquisas, avaliou por intermédio de simulações, a produtividade e a eficiência biológica de sistemas de ciclo completo de produção de bovinos de corte no Rio Grande do Sul, diferindo na idade das novilhas no primeiro parto (IP, meses) e dos novilhos ao abate (IA, meses): "Sistema Tradicional" (ST) IP48, IA54; "Sistema Melhorado" (SM), IP36, com duas idades de abate, IA36 (SM-I) e IA24 (SM-II); "Sistema Um Ano" (SU), IP24, com três idades de abate, IA36 (SU-I), IA24 (SU-II) e IA18 (SU-III). Para cada um deles foram avaliadas mudanças na taxa de natalidade (TN) entre 50 e 90%. O ST foi baseado em campo nativo. Os outros sistemas introduziram o ajuste da carga sazonal do campo nativo e pastagens nativas melhoradas com espécies hibernais, para as categorias em evolução. A produção de peso vivo (PV) mostrou incrementos decrescentes com a TN, atingindo valores máximos de 73, 97, 129, 116, 149 e 151 kg/ha nos sistemas ST, SM-I, SM-II, SU-I, SU-II e SU-III, respectivamente. A TN ótima aumentou com a IP. A resposta a aumentos na TN entre 50% e o ótimo mostrou uma tendência a crescer, quanto menor for a IA dos novilhos: 23,2% (SU-III), 22,2% (SM-II), 21,4% (SU-II), 20,3% (SM-I), 16,8% (SU-I), e 15,1% (ST). A eficiência biológica no SU-III com TN=80% foi de 35,1 Mcal EM/kg PV. A melhoria simultânea dos índices reprodutivos e produtivos permitiu reduzir o custo energético por quilo de PV em 42,2% em relação ao ST com TN=50%.

This research evaluated the effect of supplementation with cracked corn grain (0 or 1% of liveweight) on the performance of Hereford steers grazing a mixed pasture of legume and grass at 3 forage allowances (3, 6 or 9 kg DM/100 kg liveweight). The experiments were conducted in West Uruguay over 2 consecutive summers, with 72 Hereford steers (282 ± 15.3 kg; n = 36/year) randomly allocated to 1 of the 6 treatments in a factorial arrangement. Cattle were supplemented in individual pens and weighed every 14 days. Grain intake did not differ (P>0.05) between forage allowances. Both supplementing and increasing forage allowance reduced (P<0.01) forage utilisation. Year effect was significant (P<0.01) for liveweight gain and grain intake, but neither the 2- nor the 3-way interaction of year with forage allowance or supplementation was significant (P>0.05). Increasing forage allowance only improved (P<0.01) liveweight gain of non-supplemented cattle (0.299, 0.483, 0.667 kg/day for forage allowance of 3, 6 or 9%, respectively). Hence, response to supplementation decreased with forage allowance, increasing the grain (kg)/gain (kg) conversion ratio. These results provide a quantitative basis on which to decide upon the best feeding management option for summer.

RESUMO -Foram avaliadas, por meio de simulações, a produtividade e a eficiência de sistemas de produção de gado de corte no Rio Grande do Sul, diferindo na idade de abate (IA) dos novilhos (54, 42, 36, 30, 24 e 18 meses, IA54, IA42, IA36, IA30, IA24 e IA18, respectivamente), ou nos pesos de compra e venda (sistemas especializados na recria desde 150 a 250 kg -R1, recria de 250 a 350 kg -R2 ou engorda desde 350 a 450 kg -R3). Foi utilizado um modelo estático determinístico, representando os sistemas em equilíbrio. O manejo alimentar foi caracterizado para cada sistema com base em dados bibliográficos, conforme a IA estabelecida, enquanto os sistemas R1, R2 e R3 foram avaliados somente em campo nativo. Houve uma resposta em produtividade de tipo quadrático à redução na IA, atingindo o menor valor (65 kg/ha) no sistema IA54 e o maior no IA18 (343 kg/ha). O custo energético por quilo de peso vivo produzido aumentou em 1,19 Mcal EM/kg a cada mês a mais na IA. Associada à redução da IA, a proporção de pastagens melhoradas cresceu até 68% da área de pastejo, possibilitando um aumento paralelo da carga e do ganho médio diário. A diminuição do peso de compra e venda dos animais, para um mesmo ganho total de peso vivo, aumentou a produtividade das empresas (R1=113; R2=81; R3=63 kg/ha), demonstrando ser a especialização na produção uma alternativa de melhoria em sistemas dependentes exclusivamente do campo nativo.Palavras-chave: bovinos, crescimento, eficiência, produtividade, simulação, sistemas Productivity and Biological Efficiency of Growing and Finishing Beef Cattle Systems in Rio Grande do SulABSTRACT -A static deterministic model was used to evaluate productivity and efficiency of growing and finishing beef steers systems in Rio Grande do Sul State differing at steers slaughter age (IA): 54, 42, 36, 30, 24 and 18 months (IA54, IA42, IA36, IA30, IA24 e IA18, respectively), or in market live weight for buying and sale (cattle growing systems from 150 to 250 kg -R1, from 250 to 350 kg -R2, or finishing cattle from 350 to 450 kg -R3). Feeding management was described for each system based on published reports according to IA, while for systems R1, R2 and R3 it was considered that native pastures were the exclusive forage resource. There was a quadratic response curve between productivity and IA, with a minimum production (65 kg/ha) for IA54 and the highest for IA18 (343 kg/ha). Energetic cost per kg of produced live weight was linearly increased in 1.19 Mcal ME for each month increased at IA. Reducing IA, increased the proportion of the grazing area that was occupied by improved pastures up to 66%. This allowed higher stocking rates and daily gains, as well. For an equal total live weight gain, reducing steer weight for buying and sale, increased system productivity (R1: 113, R2: 81 and R3: 63 kg/ha), so that productive specialization appears as an alternative for improving those systems which depends exclusively on native pastures.

Supplementing growing cattle grazing native subtropical Campos grasslands during winter improves the low, even negative, average daily weight gain (ADG) typical of extensive animal production systems in Uruguay. Nonetheless, to render the practice profitable it is crucial to control supplement feed efficiency (SFE), that is, the difference in ADG between supplemented and control animals (ADGchng) per unit of supplement dry matter (DM) intake. Little has been studied specifically on how SFE varies in these systems. The objective of this study was to quantify the magnitude and variation in SFE of growing beef cattle grazing stockpiled native Campos grasslands during winter and assess putative associations with herbage, animals, supplements, and climatic variables. We compiled data from supplementation trials carried out in Uruguay between 1993 and 2018, each evaluating between one and six supplementation treatments. The average ADG of unsupplemented and supplemented animals were 0.13±0.174 and 0.49±0.220 kg/animal/day, respectively. In both cases, ADG decreased linearly as the proportion of green herbage in the grazed grassland was lower, but the ADG of unsupplemented animals was further reduced when winter frosts were numerous. Estimated SFE were moderately high, with an average of 0.21±0.076 ADGchng/kg DM, resulting from average ADGchng of 0.38±0.180 kg/animal/day in response to an average supplementation rate of 1.84±0.68 kg supplement DM intake/animal/day (0.86±0.27 %body weight). No association was found between SFE and supplementation rate nor type (protein vs. energy-based; p&gt;0.05), but forage allowance negatively affected it, and herbage mass positively affected it, yet in a smaller magnitude, suggesting that a balance is needed between the two to maximize SFE. Weather conditions during trials affected SFE (p&lt;0.05), with greater SFE in winters with lower temperatures and more frosts. Daytime grazing time was consistently lower in supplemented animals compared to their unsupplemented counterparts, whereas ruminating time during the day was similar, increasing as the proportion of green herbage decreased. Herbage intake estimated from energy balance suggested the existence of some substitution effect. This agrees with the moderately high SFE and with the total digestible nutrients-to-protein ratio of these subtropical humid grasslands being higher than in semiarid rangelands and dry-season tropical pastures but lower than in sown pastures.

La producción de manzanas de calidad depende fuertemente de una efectiva polinización. Las abejas melíferas son el principal insecto polinizador de los manzanos. Sin embargo, durante las visitas a las flores las abejas pueden abordarlas desde arriba entrando en contacto con las anteras o por el costado posándose sobre los pétalos, siendo la primera forma la que logra una mejor polinización. El objetivo de este estudio fue analizar el comportamiento de las abejas melíferas mientras visitan las flores de los manzanos de las variedades Cripps Pink y Red Chief. En ambos cultivos se observó que las abejas prefieren colectar polen en la mañana y néctar en la tarde. Mientras las abejas que colectaban solo néctar o que colectaban polen y néctar abordaban las flores por arriba o por el costado, las abejas que colectaban sólo polen accedían a la flor principalmente desde arriba. Algunas abejas durante el vuelo de pecoreo abordaban las flores únicamente por arriba o por el costado (abordajes constantes), mientras que otras podían cambiar entre ambas formas (abordajes no constantes), siendo las que colectaban sólo polen las que presentaron más vuelos constantes. El 37 % del total de abejas observadas abordó las flores por el costado aportando probablemente muy poco a la polinización. Un manejo de las colmenas que incrementara el número de abejas que colecta polen (por ejemplo agregando panales con huevos y larvas o retirando reservas de polen) mejoraría la polinización de los manzanos.
