Nous présentons une étude du rôle de l'argumentation dans l'enseignement des sciences à l'école élémentaire qui a été réalisée dans le cadre d'une recherche nationale portant sur l'argumentation dans les différentes disciplines. Nous nous appuyons sur une caractérisation des pratiques de communication des chercheurs en sciences pour analyser les enjeux argumentatifs et explicatifs d'une démarche scientifique scolaire s'inspirant des pratiques sociales des chercheurs. Nous avons mis en place un dispositif didactique permettant la constitution d'une communauté d'élèves regroupant plusieurs classes d'école élémentaires reliées par Internet autour d'un projet scientifique commun. La communication a été institutionnalisée dans cette « communauté scientifique scolaire » tout au long de la réalisation de ce projet. L'observation des échanges oraux et écrits dans la classe et sur le réseau électronique montre comment les activités discursives, articulées avec des activités expérimentales, peuvent contribuer à l'élaboration de discours et de connaissances partagés par les élèves. Elle met aussi en évidence l'étroite imbrication des enjeux argumentatifs et explicatifs lors des échanges entre élèves. Le dispositif didactique utilisé dans cette étude (1) met enjeu plusieurs écoles élémentaires reliées par Internet autour d'activités scientifiques relatives au thème général de l'air. Plusieurs « projets de recherche » sont élaborés par des « cyber-équipes » regroupant des élèves de différentes classes échangeant régulièrement leurs questions et leurs résultats aux différentes étapes de la recherche. Deux réseaux de communication sont institutionnalisés dans cette opérade la classe à une tion : le réseau (classique) interne à chaque classe basé sur la communautéd'élèves proximité spatiale mais regroupant des élèves travaillant sur élargie des projets différents et le réseau électronique basé sur la proximité thématique et permettant la communication entre élèves géographiquement éloignés. C'est l'existence de ce deuxième réseau qui constitue l'originalité de ce dispositif. Il permet d'élargir le débat entre élèves au-delà de la classe en constituant une communauté d'élèves réunie autour d'un projet scientifique commun. Nous présentons un dispositif didactique reposant sur l'idée d'une transposition des pratiques sociales des chercheurs scientifiques et prenant en compte deux aspects de l'activité de recherche : l'investigation scientifique et la communication entre chercheurs. La "recherche scolaire" a porté sur la "maison du futur" et a été organisée de manière coopérative entre plusieurs écoles reliées en réseau par Internet La communication entre les élèves était présente à toutes les étapes de la démarche scientifique depuis la définition de "l'objet de recherche" jusqu'à la publication des résultats sur Internet lors d'un "cyber-congrès déjeunes chercheurs". Cette communication a reposé principalement sur de nombreux écrits réalisés par les élèves et disponibles pour l'ensemble des "cyber-chercheurs" dans une base documentaire commune accessible par Internet. Le contexte de production textuelle de cette action est présenté dans ses dimensions didactique et linguistique ; une analyse des écrits est réalisée avec des outils issus de la linguistique. Les résultats obtenus montrent les possibilités mais aussi les limites d'un travail d'écriture scientifique en réseau à l'école ; ils ouvrent des perspectives sur de nouvelles modalités d'apprentissage scientifique basées sur la communication entre élèves.

Les rébellions de 1837,1838 dans le Haut,Canada sont très mal connues au Québec. Mal gr é le développement de nouveaux champs d'études sur l'his, toire des rébellions dans le Bas,Canada, le fossé historiographique entre ces rébellions et celles du Haut,Canada reste béant. Très rares sont les ouvrages récents, exhaustifs et crédibles traitant simultanément de l'ensemble des aspects caractérisant les rébellions des deux colonies 1 • En français, il est pra, tiquement impossible de bien se documenter sur la rébellion du Haut, Canada, à moins de se contenter de la courte brochure historique publiée en 1988 par Read 2 , d'un article succint de Stagg 3 , des passages du Dictionnaire biographique du Canada traitant des protagonistes impliqués 4 ou encore des manuels pédagogiques traitant exhaustivement de l'histoire du Canada 5 • La lecture de cette littérature fragmentaire ne favorise pas le développement d'une compréhension globale de l'ensemble des événements de 183 7, 1838 dans le Haut,Canada. C'est pourquoi il nous semble opportun d'analyser le récit de ces événements, récit qui pourrait être complété par la lecture de l'excellent ouvrage de Fryer 6 • Sans traiter longuement des causes spécifiques de la rébellion du Haut, Canada 7 , il est néanmoins nécessaire de resituer dans son contexte his, torique l'émergence du mouvement réformiste. Souvent très justifiées, leurs nombreuses doléances sont bien connues: omnipotence du Family Compact et de l'Église Anglicane, corruption, patronage, favoritisme, exclusion rela, tive des citoyens d'origine américaine au sein du gouvernement, incompré, hension et indifférence relative du gouvernement britannique, impuissance de la Chambre d' Assemblée au sein d'un gouvernement oligarchique, lenteur des autorités coloniales à construire des infrastructures, spéculation foncière effrénée rendue possible par les politiques laxistes du gouvernement colonial, etc. Soulignons que ces doléances n'étaient pas nouvelles, plusieurs ayant déjà été dénoncées dès la fin des années 1810 par le réformiste radical Robert Gourlay. Depuis, une proportion appréciable de la populationsurtout rurale -appuyait de près ou de loin les réformistes, dont les 116
