Physicochemical, acceptance and palynological studies were performed in stingless bee honeys from Soconusco, Chiapas, in order to learn and contribute to their knowledge in the Tropics. Nine honey samples were collected from Melipona solani (Ms), M. beecheii (Mb) and Scaptotrigona mexicana (Sm) in different meliponaries. Our results registered physico-chemical values that ranged as follow; pH 2.8-4.8, electrical conductivity (EC) 114-1211 μS/cm, free acidity 24-100 meq/kg, aw 59-71 g/100g, moisture 35-38 %, color 0.13-0.75 Pfund scale, reducing sugars 47-71 %, hidroxymethylfurfural (HMF) not determined – 2.72 mg/100g, and diastase activity 1.92-11.22 DN. On the other hand, the principal component analysis (PCA) of physicochemical values showed that 86.9 % of the total variability between species was explained by the following parameters aw, moisture, free acidity, color, pH, sugars and EC. Sm honeys were associated (PCA) with a higher water content, free acidity and darker colors, while Melipona honeys with a sweeter taste and a lower diastase activity; thus honeys could be grouped by genera. The acceptance test showed that 78 % of honeys were preferred, being the SmCa sample in the category “I likely dislike” due to the bitter taste (disapproved by consumers). The melisopalynological results showed that M. beecheii honeys are monofloral with a 45 % of Fabaceae pollen, while Melipona solani and Scaptotrigona mexicana honeys are multi or polyfloral with diferent pollen types; Fabaceae, Melastomataceae, Malvaceae and Asteraceae. From this complementary study we can asume that it is necessary to implicate researchers with producers, so they could have accesss to stingless bee honey analysis and to help them to improve meliponaries management by identifying and introducing stingless bee flora.
<p><strong>Background</strong><strong>:</strong> The three<em>-main</em> cacao (<em>Theobroma cacao</em>) varieties cultivated in México are: Criollo, Forastero, and Trinitario. Each variety has a different fruit setting time and has been subjected to several selection stages. The aim of this study was to determine the susceptibility of the three cacao varieties to Frosty pod rot caused by <em>Moniliophthora roreri</em>. We also analyzed the physicochemical properties of the pericarp of the three varieties and its domestication age.</p><p><strong>Question</strong><strong>:</strong> Is there a relationship between the degree of domestication of the cacao variety and its susceptibility to Frosty pod rot?</p><p><strong>Studied species</strong><strong>:</strong> <em>Theobroma cacao</em> fruits.</p><p><strong>Study site</strong><strong>:</strong> A cacao plantation in Chiapas, Mexico.</p><p><strong>Methods</strong>: The content of moisture, lignin, phenols, peroxidase activity and hardness of the pericarp were analyzed in the middle zone of healthy fruits at 4, 8 and 12 weeks of development. Number of healthy and infected fruits were recorded every week.</p><p><strong>Results</strong><strong>:</strong> The highest susceptibility to Frosty pod rot was found in the immature stage of fruits from the Criollo variety. The disease was mostly found in the mid-zone of the fruit. The <em>Criollo</em> variety was the most susceptible. This variety showed the highest moisture values and the lowest values of the other measured parameters.</p><p><strong>Conclusions</strong><strong>:</strong> The finest cacao is obtained from the Criollo variety, the one with the highest degree of domestication, and also the most susceptible to frosty pod rot. We suggest using material from wild Criollo populations and from the Forastero and Trinitario varieties in future breeding and selection programs.</p>
Black Sigatoka is the most destructive disease of the leaves of bananas. The increased resistance of the pathogen and the contamination caused by chemical fungicides have guided the search for control alternatives. The objective of the work was to determine the effect of the combination of extracts of garlic (Allium sativum) and clove (Syzygium aromaticum) in the development of Mycosphaerella fijiensis. The phytopathogen was grown in potato-dextrose-agar (PDA) media added with different concentrations of extracts. A factorial design of two factors at four levels was established. At higher concentration of garlic extract, less capacity to inhibit M. fijiensis colony. In contrast, the clove extract showed greater inhibition capacity at the higher concentration. The greatest inhibition of the growth, 39.6%, was with the mixture of 150 mg of garlic extract·ml -1 and 36 mg of clove extract·ml -1 . Effect of alcoholic extracts of garlic (Allium
In Mexico, poultry meat represents 24,8 % of the protein consumed. In the search for protein sources that meet this demand, the use of insects has been found to be of potential interest. In order to reduce the effect of the components that affect the absorption of nutrients, additives such as digestive enzymes and microorganisms have been used. The objective of this study was to determine the weight gain of birds (Gallus gallus domesticus) fed with diets formulated with fruit fly pupa (Anastrepha ludens), digestive enzymes and yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae). Groups were established completely at random with different inclusions of fly pupae 0 %, 12 %, 14 % and 16 % respectively and significant differences were found (p<0.05). The group with 14 % protein was the one with the greatest weight gain during the experiment and the second phase used digestive enzymes and Saccharomyces cerevisiae and it was found that treatment 3: 14 % of Anastrepha ludens pupa + 200 IU of Protease + 1502 IU of Amylase + 80 IU of Cellulase + 62 IU of Lipase + 40 IU of Pectinase + 8.88x109 CFU S. cerevisiae / 100 g of feed showed differences (p<0.05) and the best results in the weight gain of the birds. It is concluded that inclusion of 14 % of fly pupa in rations promotes the weight gain of Gallus gallus domesticus with the addition of digestive enzymes and S. cerevisiae.
