Resumen. En este trabajo mostramos cómo introducir las funciones exponenciales y trigonométricas con base en los conceptos y los métodos propios del cálculo diferencial. Presentamos una construcción de esas funciones como generalizaciones naturales de la clase de funciones polinomiales, al resolver ciertas ecuaciones diferenciales elementales que describen algunas de las leyes dinámicas más importantes que gobiernan los fenómenos en la naturaleza. Con este enfoque se rescata el sentido y propósito del cálculo como la rama de la matemática para la descripción del cambio continuo y del movimiento. A partir del problema de encontrar las soluciones de ecuaciones diferenciales que describen el crecimiento de poblaciones y la dinámica del oscilador armónico, obtenemos a partir de las condiciones iniciales del problema y de la aplicación del Teorema de Taylor, los coeficientes de las series de potencias que definen a la función exponencial y a las funciones trigonométricas, mostrando paralelamente la importancia del concepto de límite como fundamento del cálculo diferencial.
