Two outbreaks of closantel overdosage in sheep and goat flocks are described. In the first outbreak 12 sheep were affected, 5 of them showed blindness, three sheep died (Sheep 1-3) and two were euthanized 6 months after the onset of clinical manifestation (Sheep 4 and 5). In the second outbreak 26 goats were affected, from which six survived despite blindness and one was euthanized. Clinically the animals showed depression, ataxia, motor incoordination, decreased or absent pupil reflexes. In some animals this clinical picture developed to bilateral blindness, with no reaction to threat and bilateral irresponsive midriasis. In the ophthalmic examination retinal vessel atrophy and hyperreflexia were observed. The histological examination showed myelin edema leading to status spongiosus in the central nervous system and compressive neuropathy of the optic nerve, associated with retinal degeneration and/or atrophy. This report aims to describe the epidemiologic, clinic and pathologic aspects of closantel overdosage in sheep and goats.
Abstract. Toxicosis caused by the ingestion of onion (Allium cepa) by 5 water buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) occurred in the district of Caçador, Santa Catarina, Brazil. The water buffalo died after ingestion of a large quantity of onion that had been left in the pasture. Clinical signs started 8 days postingestion and were characterized by pale mucous membranes, lethargy, and dark urine. At necropsy, pieces of onions were found in the rumen of 1 animal. The carcass smelled strongly of onion, and the kidneys and urine were dark brown. Microscopic renal lesions included tubular degeneration and necrosis with deposits of eosinophilic material in the cytoplasm of renal tubular epithelial cells and tubular lumina. These changes were consistent with hemoglobinuric nephrosis. Centrilobular coagulation necrosis was observed in the liver accompanied by hemorrhage and macrophages containing brown cytoplasmic pigment. A diagnosis of hemolytic anemia caused by onion toxicosis was based on the epidemiological data, clinical signs, macroscopic changes, and histological lesions.
Current research studied, by dissection, the origin and distribution of the ischiatic nerve in 30 fetuses of mixed-breed male or female sheep (Ovis aries), obtained from abortions, stillborns and natural deaths of pregnant females on farms in the Triângulo Mineiro region, state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Formaldehyde 10% was injected through the cannulation of descending thoracic aorta and the material was kept immersed in the solution for at least 48 hours before dissection. The ischiatic nerve originated from the ventral branch of the last lumbar spinal nerve, either from the sixth lumbar spinal nerve (L6) or from the seventh (L7), when present, and from the ventral branches of first and second sacral spinal nerves (S1 and S2, respectively), and possibly from the ventral branch of third sacral spinal nerve (S3). The ischiatic nerve provided branches to the superficial gluteal, middle gluteal, accessory gluteal, deep gluteal, gemelli, quadratus femoris, adductor, biceps femoris, semitendinosus and semimembranosus muscles. The tibial and common peroneal nerves were the terminal branches of the ischiatic nerve, originating distally towards the greater trochanter of the femur bone. Wilcoxon's test (0.05) showed that statistically there were no significant differences between the frequencies of the muscular branches of the ischiatic nerve and the antimeres, regardless of the number of muscular branches. Keywords: Anatomy. Innervation. Lumbosacral plexus. Small ruminants.
The paper reports the epidemiological data, clinical signs and lesions of four outbreaks of acute pulmonary edema and emphysema in cattle (ABPE) which occurred in the states of Parana and Santa Catarina, as well as its experimental reproduction. The spontaneous disease occurred after the cattle was transferred from a mature and dry pasture to another luxurious sprouting one. All affected animals were adult dairy cows of Holstein and Brown Swiss breed. The main clinical signs were dyspnea of laborious abdominal breathing with extended neck and open mouth. The sick animals also presented subcutaneous emphysema, decreased milk production, slow recovery or death. Postmortem findings were restricted to a dark red not collapsed lung, which was shiny and hyper sizzling more than usual and with marked interlobular emphysema. Histological lesions in the lung consisted of alveolar and interlobular emphysema, areas with congestion and edema, hyaline degeneration of the alveolus wall and moderate diffuse infiltration of macrophages and eosinophils. The experimental reproduction of the disease was performed in a cow by orally administration of 0.7mg/kg /LW of L--Tryptophan single dose. The animal died on the seventh day of the experiment. The clinical signs and lesions were similar to those observed in the naturally occurring disease.INDEX TERMS: L-tryptophan, pulmonary edema, pulmonary emphysema, cattle.

Toxoplasmosis is considered to be a fatal parasitic disease in New World primates. The objective of this report was to describe, through a retrospective study, the toxoplasmosis cases in New World primates. From 1999 to 2009 eighty-six anatomopathological exams was performed in primates and toxoplasmosis was the most common disease (7/86). One case occurred in Black-Tufted-Marmoset (Callithrix penicillata) and six in Brown-Howler monkeys (Alouatta guariba). Two monkeys were found death and five died within few days. The most common clinical signs were apathy and anorexia (5/7), abdominal distension (4/7) and fever (3/7). The main gross lesions were splenomegaly (4/7), hemorrhage in digestory system, lymph nodes and urinary bladder (4/7), reddish lungs (3/7) and hepatomegaly (2/7). Histopathological findings were necrotizing hepatitis (7/7), splenitis (3/7), myocarditis (2/7), enteritis (2/7), lymphadenitis (1/7) and sialitis (1/7), and interstitial pneumonia (4/7). In the liver, lungs, spleen, heart, lymph nodes and salivary gland there were tachyzoites of Toxoplasma gondii that also detected by immunohistochemistry against T. gondii in liver, spleen and lungs (5/7). Toxoplasmosis can cause high mortality in New World primate colonies and can be a threat to preservation of those species in captivity.
