Osmanlı hakimiyet sahası, Hıristiyan Avrupa’da anti-semitik muamelelere ve sürgünlere uğrayan Yahudilerin, yeni yurt arayışı içinde her daim yönelebildikleri topraklar olmuştur. Batı’dan Osmanlı Devleti’ne iltica eden birçok Yahudi topluluğu arasında, İberya kökenli Sefaradların yanı sıra, Aşkenaz olarak adlandırılan Orta ve Doğu Avrupa menşeli Yahudiler de yer almıştır. Aşkenaz göçleri, 14. yüzyılın ikinci yarısından itibaren başlamış; 15. ve 16. yüzyıllarda da başkent İstanbul dahil birçok Osmanlı kentine doğru gerçekleşmeye devam etmiştir. Bu çalışma, göçlerin Osmanlı Yahudi toplumunda demografik büyüme yarattığı bir dönemde, 16. yüzyılda, İstanbul’daki Aşkenaz cemaatinin yaşamına dair kısa bir bakış sunmaktadır. Dönemin cizye sayımlarını ihtiva eden defterlerin kaynaklığında, Aşkenaz cemaatinin nüfusu, ekonomik yapısı, cemaat mensuplarının meşguliyet alanları ve şehirdeki ikametlerine ilişkin hususlar ele alınmıştır.
Karailik, esasları 8. yüzyılda Irak’ta şekillenen bir Yahudi mezhebidir. Bu mezhebin en karakteristik özelliği, Yahudi sözlü geleneğini reddetmesi ve inanç ilkelerini yalnızca Tevrat’a dayandırmasıdır. Bu yönüyle Yahudiliğin Rabbani kanadına muhalif akımı temsil eden Karailik, göçlerle birçok coğrafyaya dağılmış ve mezhep, Bizans ülkesinde de yayılma fırsatı bulmuştur. Bizans başkenti İstanbul’a yerleşen Karailer, şehrin Osmanlılar tarafından fethi sonrasında varlıklarını devam ettirmişlerdir. Özellikle, II. Mehmet’in uygulamaya koyduğu sürgün politikası ile şehirdeki Karai nüfusu artış göstermiştir. Çalışmamızda, arşiv vesikalarının rehberliğinde, Karai cemaatinin 16. yüzyıldaki yaşamı ele alınmıştır. Bu çerçevede istifade ettiğimiz tahrir defterleri, şehrin Yahudi cemaatlerine ilişkin mühim veriler içermektedir. Döneme ait tahrir defterleri ışığında, İstanbul Karai cemaatinin nüfusu, cemaat mensuplarının ödemekle yükümlü oldukları vergiler, gelir seviyeleri, icra edilen meslekler ve yerleşim alanları değerlendirilmiştir.
