This research compares the premarital sexual permissiveness of 264 American college students in the midwest, 26 students from Hong Kong who are studying in the United States, and 153 students attending colleges and universities in Hong Kong. We found that Reiss’ (1967) Premarital Sexual Permissiveness Scales worked as Guttman scalee for the Chinese students. that Chinese students in Hong Kong are less permissive and less active concerning premarital sex, and that the majority of determinants of premarital sexual permissiveness found by Reiss (1967) and others to hold for Americans also hold as determinants of permissiveness for Chinese students. We also found that the Chinese students who were studying in America tended to adopt American standards of premarital sexual attitudes and behaviors.
