O cultivo da erva-mate tem importância econômica e social no Estado do Rio Grande do Sul. O chimarrão, infusão de folhas moídas de erva-mate em água quente, é um hábito tradicional dos gaúchos que consomem grandes quantidades do produto anualmente. A erva-mate geralmente é cultivada em solos pobres em nutrientes e ácidos, que apresentam teores variáveis de alumínio. A erva-mate é tolerante ao alumínio, metal que é fitotóxico para a maioria das culturas. O alumínio pode ser absorvido e acumulado no corpo humano e apresentar toxicidade. O objetivo deste trabalho foi quantificar o teor de alumínio em amostras de dez marcas comerciais de erva-mate comercializadas no Rio Grande do Sul. As amostras foram submetidas a dois métodos de extração: com ácido nitroperclórico, para determinar o teor total do elemento nas amostras (Al-total) e seqüencialmente com água quente a 60 °C para determinar a fração solúvel (Al-solúvel). Os teores do Al-total diferiram significativamente entre as amostras, variando de 256,85 a 715,52 mg kg-1. Os maiores teores do Al-total foram determinados nas amostras da “marca 3” (688,00 mg kg-1) e da “marca 10” (715,52 mg kg-1 ). Os teores do Al-solúvel também diferiram significativamente nas amostras, variando de 0,00 a 56,94 mg dm-3. A amostra da “marca3”, no entanto, não apresentou o maior teor de Al solúvel, o que pode indicar que, possivelmente, o teor de Al solúvel, esteja relacionado às formas iônicas e orgânicas do elemento na planta.
