A survey was made of the prevalence, diagnosis and treatment of dermatological conditions in small animals in general practice in the UK. Out of 3707 small animal consultations in general practice that were observed and recorded, 795 (21.4 per cent) involved animals that had a dermatological problem. In dogs and exotic species, pruritus was the most common presenting sign, accounting for 30 to 40 per cent of the dermatological consultations. In cats, cutaneous swellings were the most common presentation (36 per cent). A diagnosis or recommendation for treatment was made on the basis of the presenting clinical signs and physical examination alone in 576 (72 per cent) of the cases, and various diagnostic tests were performed in the other cases. In dogs, parasitic infestations, bacterial infections and neoplasia accounted for the majority of the diagnoses. In cats, parasites and bacterial infections were the most common. In exotic species, parasites accounted for over 80 per cent of the dermatological diagnoses. In dogs, the most common final diagnoses were otitis, pyoderma, anal sac impaction, flea infestation and atopic dermatitis. In cats, abscesses, flea infestation, and otitis were the most common diagnoses. In exotic species, the most common diagnosis was an unspecified mite infestation. Systemic antibiotics were prescribed in 196 cases (25 per cent), systemic glucocorticoids were prescribed in 162 cases (20 per cent) and treatment with an ectoparasiticide was prescribed in 167 cases (21 per cent).

Background/Aims: Patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) experience cognitive declines and often report significant emotional/behavioral changes. Despite this, few studies have examined the impact of MCI on caregiver burden. The purpose of this study was to confirm the presence of caregiver burden in MCI and examine the relationship between burden and patients’ neuropsychological, behavioral and emotional functioning. Methods: The current study included 51 individuals who had been diagnosed as having MCI using Petersen’s criteria. The patients underwent a thorough neuropsychological evaluation and completed the Beck Depression Inventory and Cognitive Difficulties Scale. The caregivers completed the Zarit Burden Interview and the Revised Memory and Behavior Checklist. Results: More than 30% of the caregivers reported clinically significant burden. Increased caregiver burden was associated with a longer course of cognitive symptoms, patient reports of worse depression and greater cognitive difficulties, and informant reports of patients having more behavior, mood and memory problems. Caregiver burden was not significantly associated with patients’ neuropsychological test performance. Conclusion: The results highlight the importance of addressing patients’ behavioral and emotional difficulties, as well as caregiver burden, as part of the clinical exam in MCI.

Patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) frequently experience significant depressive symptomatology and report cognitive disturbances. To date, no studies have examined the relationship between MCI patients' neuropsychologic functioning, self-reported depressive symptoms, and self-reported cognitive difficulties. In this study, 82 MCI patients completed a comprehensive neuropsychological evaluation that included the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). A subset of 41 patients and informants also completed a measure of cognitive difficulties. Poorer memory functioning was associated with fewer self-reported depressive symptoms and fewer cognitive complaints.

Although naming impairment is common among persons with dementia, little is known about how specific error types on naming tasks may differ between dementias. Recent research has suggested that persons with dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) have more visuospatial/visuoperceptual dysfunction than those with Alzheimer's disease (AD), which may impact their ability to correctly perceive and name objects. Our retrospective study evaluated the presence and frequency of error types among patients with DLB and AD on the Boston Naming Test (BNT). Errors on the BNT were classified into five types (i.e., visuoperceptual, semantic, phonemic, no response, and other), and performance was compared among 31 probable DLB patients and 31 probable AD patients matched for age, gender, education, and overall dementia severity. AD patients' overall performance on the BNT was significantly worse than DLB patients (p<.05). In terms of error types, DLB patients made significantly more visuoperceptual errors (p<.05) while AD patients made significantly more semantic errors (p<.001). Logistic regression revealed that the number of visuoperceptual and semantic errors significantly predicted group membership (p<.005), with an accuracy of up to 85%. Results suggest that error analysis of BNT responses may be useful in distinguishing between patients with DLB and AD.

Understanding the actions of others is a necessary foundational cornerstone for effective and affective social interactions. Such understanding may result from a mapping of observed actions as well as heard sounds onto one's own motor representations of those events. To examine the electrophysiological basis of action-related sounds, EEG data were collected in two studies from adults who were exposed to auditory events in one of three categories: action (either hand- or mouth-based sounds), non-action (environmental sounds), and control sounds (scrambled versions of action sounds). In both studies, triplets of sounds of the same category were typically presented, although occasionally, to ensure an attentive state, trials containing a sound from a different category were presented within the triplet and participants were asked to respond to this oddball event either covertly in one study or overtly in another. Additionally, participants in both studies were asked to mimic hand- and mouth-based motor actions associated with the sounds (motor task). Action sounds elicited larger EEG mu rhythm (8–13 Hz) suppression, relative to control sounds, primarily over left hemisphere, while non-action sounds showed larger mu suppression primarily over right hemisphere. Furthermore, hand-based sounds elicited greater mu suppression over the hand area in sensorimotor cortex compared to mouth-based sounds. These patterns of mu suppression across cortical regions to different categories of sounds and to effector-specific sounds suggest differential engagement of a mirroring system in the human brain when processing sounds.

This study indicates that the prevalence of recreational drug use in patients with DI is high, and that patients do not always disclose their habit. It is hoped that this pilot study will lead to further research into this finding.

We report, to our knowledge, the first case of MHs associated with temporal lobectomy for epilepsy. This patient had multiple risk factors for these unwanted musical experiences, including epilepsy, mild neuropsychiatric dysfunction, and tinnitus plus hearing loss. Possible mechanisms for MHs are discussed.
