Despite El Niño events being one of the main forces shaping the coastal desert vegetation in South America, the impacts of the high precipitation typical of this rare but recurrent climatic event remain understudied. Here we monitored the plant community of a coastal lomas, a seasonal desert ecosystem, during 1998 and 2001 to analyse its changes during the 1997–98 El Niño and the following La Niña events. We measured species abundance and vegetation cover in 31 plots, and recorded climate variables in Lomas de Lachay, Peru. We found a significant positive correlation between precipitation and vegetation cover, density, alpha diversity (species diversity at the plot level), total richness and abundance of several key species but no correlation with gamma diversity (species diversity at the whole loma level). During the El Niño event, the seasonality, typical of the lomas ecosystem, disappeared, as evidenced by both the similarity of species composition and mean vegetation cover values between most sampling campaigns of 1998 and 1999. Moreover, total richness was lower during the El Niño event than during the humid season of 2000 and 2001 resulting from the dominance of only a few species, such as Nicotiana paniculata and Loasa urens. Temporal-spatial changes in the abundance of the dominant species caused the differences between alpha and gamma diversity, especially during 1999. Within that year, mean alpha diversity showed similar values whilst gamma diversity values were different. The reestablishment of the seasonality of most plant community characteristics and a clear difference between species composition of the humid and the dry season occurred two years after the El Niño event, suggesting a resilient community. This study provides one of the few quantifications of the Peruvian lomas’ response to the 1997–98 El Niño event and the following La Niña, one of the most extreme climatic events in the last century.
AbstractFew studies of vegetation conducted in arid zones have associated soil factors with plant associations. In our study we try to understand which are the most important soil factors that affect composition, distribution and structure of the community. The cacti community was studied at Umarcata Hill and Orobel Valley of the Chillon River Basin. A simple random sampling was carried out in square 15 meter sided plots, with 14 plots per area. Every area was divided into three zones: high, medium and low. Soil samples were analyzed to determine potassium, phosphorus, and organic matter concentration, pH, electrical conductivity and calcium carbonate percentage .The diversity values at Umarcata Hill lie in the rank from 0.75 to 1.789 bits / individual, whereas in Orobel Valley they rank from 1.22 to 1.88 bits / individual. In the latter, specific diversity and equity are higher indicating a stable and organized community. Phosphorus (15 to 42 ppm) and potassium (300 to 800 ppm) are the factors that limit cacti growth in the community. Electric conductivity (0.3 dS/m) is related to diversity due to the fact that it measures soil salinity, which in turn affects plant growth.
Palabras claves: Evento El Niño, variación espacio-temporal, Ley de Taylor y "Hotspots" AbstractTaylor´s power has its bases in the relationship between the average density of a population and its space-temporary variation. In other words it is an empirical relationship between the variance and average of abundance estimations. This is described by the potential ecuation S² = a mb, where S² and m represent the variance and the average, respectively, whereas a and b are parameters to be estimated statistically. The Law of Taylor allows to quantify the degree of aggregation by means of the slope of the model indicating if population patterns are uniform, random or aggregate. Readfern and Pimm (1988) replaced the variance by the variability coefficient, and McArdle (1990) used it to generate a new equation of the Taylor´s Law. The present study was conducted at Lachay National Reserve from February 1998 to July 1999 during which a constant evaluation of the space-temporary variations of the population patterns of the herbaceous community of this ecosystem was made. With this research we determined the main population patterns of the determining species of the herbaceous community of Lachay, as well as their space-temporary variations in a disturbing event such as "El Niño" (1997)(1998). As a result we appreciated the population pattern of 16 plant species of the herbac...
Palabras clave: ecosistemas áridos, entomofauna, fenología, interacciones, nodricismo Abstract A literature review on Neoraimondia arequipensis subsp. roseiflora (Werdermann & Backeberg) Ostolaza (1998), an endemic cactus in Peru, was performed. Previous researches show that there is a strong relation between the cactus and the ecosystem. This relation is manifested through interactions between this cactus and nurse plants, soil, pollination, seed dispersal, and surrounding enthomofauna, which reinforces the hypothesis that this cactus has a very important role in arid ecosystems and that it is the central axis in the trophic chain of a group of organisms. Finally, we outline future studies that could be carried out in order to understand the role played by this cactus as an axis of the interactions in arid ecosystems in Peru, as well as population's dynamics and community structure in the desert.
