Despite El Niño events being one of the main forces shaping the coastal desert vegetation in South America, the impacts of the high precipitation typical of this rare but recurrent climatic event remain understudied. Here we monitored the plant community of a coastal lomas, a seasonal desert ecosystem, during 1998 and 2001 to analyse its changes during the 1997–98 El Niño and the following La Niña events. We measured species abundance and vegetation cover in 31 plots, and recorded climate variables in Lomas de Lachay, Peru. We found a significant positive correlation between precipitation and vegetation cover, density, alpha diversity (species diversity at the plot level), total richness and abundance of several key species but no correlation with gamma diversity (species diversity at the whole loma level). During the El Niño event, the seasonality, typical of the lomas ecosystem, disappeared, as evidenced by both the similarity of species composition and mean vegetation cover values between most sampling campaigns of 1998 and 1999. Moreover, total richness was lower during the El Niño event than during the humid season of 2000 and 2001 resulting from the dominance of only a few species, such as Nicotiana paniculata and Loasa urens. Temporal-spatial changes in the abundance of the dominant species caused the differences between alpha and gamma diversity, especially during 1999. Within that year, mean alpha diversity showed similar values whilst gamma diversity values were different. The reestablishment of the seasonality of most plant community characteristics and a clear difference between species composition of the humid and the dry season occurred two years after the El Niño event, suggesting a resilient community. This study provides one of the few quantifications of the Peruvian lomas’ response to the 1997–98 El Niño event and the following La Niña, one of the most extreme climatic events in the last century.
Palabras claves: Evento El Niño, variación espacio-temporal, Ley de Taylor y "Hotspots" AbstractTaylor´s power has its bases in the relationship between the average density of a population and its space-temporary variation. In other words it is an empirical relationship between the variance and average of abundance estimations. This is described by the potential ecuation S² = a mb, where S² and m represent the variance and the average, respectively, whereas a and b are parameters to be estimated statistically. The Law of Taylor allows to quantify the degree of aggregation by means of the slope of the model indicating if population patterns are uniform, random or aggregate. Readfern and Pimm (1988) replaced the variance by the variability coefficient, and McArdle (1990) used it to generate a new equation of the Taylor´s Law. The present study was conducted at Lachay National Reserve from February 1998 to July 1999 during which a constant evaluation of the space-temporary variations of the population patterns of the herbaceous community of this ecosystem was made. With this research we determined the main population patterns of the determining species of the herbaceous community of Lachay, as well as their space-temporary variations in a disturbing event such as "El Niño" (1997)(1998). As a result we appreciated the population pattern of 16 plant species of the herbac...
Arthropods were sampled from the end of the dry season (August 2001) to the beginning of the following dry season (June 2002), using pitfall traps. The burning experiment was carried in the first days of October (beginning of the rain season), using Head Fire Burnings (in favour of the wind). The plot was named Burnt Zone (ZQ) and was compared with a control plot named Non Burnt Zone (ZNQ). Burning effects in the arthropod assemblages were assessed analyzing community variables (abundance, equitability, richness, diversity and composition) at morphospecies level separating macroarthropods, microarthropods and functional groups (abundance and richness). The class that was most abundant was Collembola with 59 %, followed by Insect with 28 %; and the most abundant functional group comprised detritivores. Community variables were influenced by marked dominance of Entomobryidae-01 morphospecies before burning, which generated a decrease in diversity. Student´s t-test was used and significant differences were found in the abundance and the diversity average alpha of the arthropods (P<0.05) before a...
AbstractEnvironmental Quality Standards are instruments part of the Peruvian environmental legislation that seem to have contradictions: they define ecosystems as complex adaptive systems (CAS), but their management objectives and tools consider them as simple systems. This is expressed in two assumptions that are used tacitly and that state that (1) the ecosystems are in steady state and (2) environmental quality can be evaluated taking into consideration individual variables without paying attention to their interactions. The first hypothesis does not consider that a CAS can evolve or change; the second one ignores that a CAS has emergent behaviors that arise from the interaction of their different variables and that are different from the mere sum of individual behaviors. These two assumptions are tested with information generated in the monitoring of a gas engineering project in Playa Lobería, Pisco, which refers to the physical and chemical variables of the sea surface waters and the macrozoobentos biomass in trans...
AbstractCajatambo district is capital of the province of the same name of the Department of Lima. It is located in the northern part of the west-central Sierra of Peru between 2 600 and 5 654 meters above sea level. It is qualified as a poverty zone and purely agricultural and livestock. Has about 2 000 inhabitants, with migratory trend towards the cities of Barranca, Huacho and Lima. The agrarian system of the district consists of a set of parts or subsystems that through the present study it was sought to identify using a survey made to 97 producers (10% of total population). The survey consisted of 32 questions, 6 on socio-economic aspects and 26 issues of agricultural production. Using tools of multivariate analysis identified four groups on producers: "puneros-maiceros", "cuyeros-maiceros", "vaqueros" and "undifferentiated" -called by cultivation or breeding practice preferably, except the "undifferentiated" have a marginal agricultural activity. Groups -whose differences reached statistical significance -an end to the "maiceros-cuyeros" with scant possession of title deeds, limited membership of associations of producers, void receiving training from source an and pretty scatter among the towns of the district. At the other end are the "vaqueros"; that you most have land titles, they belong to an Association of producers and have the highest level of instruction. "Puneros-maiceros" are loca...
