Introdução: A hipertensão arterial é considerada como um grande problema de saúde pública. Na mulher a hipertensão arterial gestacional é classificada no Brasil como o maior índice de mortalidade materna. O conhecimento das mulheres no clico gravídico puerperal, é primordial para a promoção da saúde e prevenção dos agravos que acometem a mãe e o bebê. Objetivo do estudo: O presente estudo tem como objetivo analisar o conhecimento das mulheres, internadas em uma Maternidade, sobre a Hipertensão Arterial Sistêmica no ciclo gravídico puerperal. Materiais e métodos: Trata-se de um estudo exploratório com abordagem qualitativa. Os dados foram coletados com 11 mulheres no ciclo gravídico puerperal, por meio de uma entrevista com perguntas semiestruturadas. O presente estudo foi submetido ao Comitê de Ética e Pesquisa do Centro Universitário de Valença, sendo aprovado pelo parecer de número 4.245.710. Resultados: Foram construídas duas categorias de análise: O conhecimento da hipertensão arterial sistêmica relacionada aos fatores de risco alimentar comportamental; A importância do pré-natal como estratégia de atenção e segurança no cuidado com a hipertensão arterial sistêmica. Conclusão: Conclui-se com o presente estudo que o conhecimento de mulheres, internadas em uma Maternidade Escola na região Médio Paraíba do Estado do Rio de Janeiro, sobre a hipertensão arterial sistêmica no ciclo gravídico puerperal são suficientes para prevenir problemas causados na mãe e no bebê, devido a hipertensão arterial.
