Résumé Cet article retrace la chronique de la crise sanitaire déclenchée au printemps 2006 par l’arrivée, dans la région française de la Dombes, du virus de la grippe aviaire h5n1hp . Il y est question de la manière dont la maladie a mobilisé les hommes selon des modalités variables, mettant en jeu à la fois les rapports sociaux et les rapports à la nature. Les oiseaux contaminés et contaminants recèlent une charge sociale explosive, à la croisée de conflits qui ont valeur de langage sur les tensions contemporaines qui traversent la société locale et plus globale.

Le décryptage des logiques d'appropriation de l'eau, dans une région d'étangs française (Dombes, Ain) permet d'analyser ce que localement les exploitants piscicoles appellent une crise hydraulique, associée à l'arrivée de nouveaux propriétaires d'étangs. Entre loi et usage, entre contrat et échange, entre mauvais procédés et bons arrangements, la logique des agissements dévoile que les difficultés de gestion de l'eau sont aussi un prétexte à la dispute, un objet dont les individus se saisissent pour défendre une position au sein de la société locale. Les conflits construisent et assurent que les groupes et les individus restent cloisonnés et hiérarchisés et permettent dans le même temps des points de passage entre eux. De même, ils témoignent d'une résistance au changement en même temps qu'ils rendent possible son assimilation.
