As bibliotecas universitárias têm papel relevante no processo ensino/aprendizagem de toda comunidade, pois relaciona-se diretamente com o estudo e a pesquisa, assim como atua nos processos sociais ao ser responsável pela disseminação do conhecimento produzido em todas as áreas do saber. Neste pensar, busca-se discutir a relevância de alguns processos adotados pela Biblioteca Hugo Dantas da Silveira da Universidade Federal do Rio Grande - FURG, para preservar os materiais do acervo corrente, uma vez que se torna necessário preservar e conservar seu acervo visando a vida útil e o uso coletivo desses materiais. Após a constatação dos materiais bibliográficos devolvidos em péssimo estado de conservação, verificou-se a necessidade de realizar ações educativas com o intuito de minimizar esta prática, sensibilizando os usuários que utilizam os produtos da biblioteca. Demonstra-se que processos de preservação são responsabilidade tanto da unidade de informação e seus profissionais quanto do usuário. Para debater o assunto foram utilizados os materiais devolvidos pelos usuários em péssimo estado de uso, colaborando com o entendimento que é preciso educar para preservar. Foram criados marca páginas sobre o assunto e exposições na biblioteca sobre materiais bibliográficos danificados. Espera-se que essas ações impactem positivamente na redução de danos a coleção desta biblioteca.
O presente artigo visa apresentar o projeto de extensão universitária “Inclusão digital para pessoas da terceira idade: curso de informática básica”, desenvolvidos pelo Sistema de Bibliotecas e acadêmicos dos cursos de Psicologia, Pedagogia e História da Universidade Federal do Rio Grande. Assim como mostrar a importância de bibliotecários desenvolverem projetos na área da Biblioteconomia Social. O projeto tem por objetivo realizar a inclusão social e digital de pessoas idosas, entendem-se idosas pessoas a cima de 60 anos. Esse público foi escolhido devido a grande procura dos mesmos nas edições anteriores dos cursos de informática básica para comunidade geral e como a necessidade informacional é diferente da comunidade geral, decidiu-se fazer cursos específicos. O projeto oferece gratuitamente curso de informática básica, módulo I e II. O módulo I é para as pessoas que não possuem conhecimento algum de informática e o módulo II é para as pessoas que já possuem algum conhecimento. Permitindo que ao fazer o módulo I com aprovação, o aluno automaticamente fará parte do módulo II. Além de beneficiar a comunidade idosa melhorando sua qualidade de vida e autoestima, o projeto também contribui para construção do conhecimento teórico-prático dos graduandos, e agrega conhecimento sobre o processo de envelhecimento. Esta pesquisa foi baseada no trabalho de Miranda; Poméia; Bueno (2004), o qual defende que fatores culturais e a faixa etária dos alunos são questões que influenciam na percepção humana, e entende que algumas imagens são convencionalmente designadas para diferentes culturas (como a norte-americana e a brasileira). A presente proposta não teve a pretensão de substituir as notações utilizadas para a classificação de assuntos em bibliotecas, amplamente difundidas (notações numéricas da CDD, CDU, etc.), mas sim, sugerir o que esta pesquisa denomina de "rotulação" destes assuntos através de imagens, para que melhor possam representá-los. Acredita-se que o objetivo da pesquisa foi alcançado: ordenamento mais claro dos materiais da biblioteca. Sugere-se o desenvolvimento desse sistema de imagens de classificação como forma alternativa de organização de bibliotecas contendo, em seu acervo literatura infantojuvenil.
