Palavras-chave: afloramento rochoso, caatinga, forma de vida, micro-habitat ABSTRACT -Flora of the inselbergs of the Natural Monument Monólitos de Quixada in the central sertão of Ceará. Inselbergs are rocky outcrop islands that occur in isolated mountains and villages, such as the Natural Monument of Monólitos de Quixadá in semiarid Ceará. We aims to know the floristic comparison of these inselbergs, the patterns of dispersal, and the predominant growth forms and life; as well as how the diversity of the microhabitat influences these attributes. For this study we carried out monthly collections of the vascular flora of two inselbergs of the Natural Monument Monólitos de Quixada for two years. We recognized the microhabitats: rock pools, drainage channel, crevices, clefts, rock wall, shallow depression, deep depression, forested belt and cavern. We recorded 107 species in 45 families, being that Fabaceae (13 species), Apocynaceae (11), Euphorbiaceae (06), Bromeliaceae (05) and Cactaceae (04) were most representative. Their richness and composition differs from other inselbergs. Zoochoric species (43), phanerophytes (64) and trees (45) were predominant, contrary to what was expected for semi-arid regions. We concluded that these differences are due to the intrinsic characteristics of the nine recognized microhabitats, such as amount of substrate and water availability.
The biota of the humid mountain ranges of the Brazilian semiarid is still poorly understood. In order to fill this scientific gap, we carried out an extensive survey along altitudinal ranges (400m-1,000 m) on both the windward and the leeward slopes of the Baturité Mountain Range, in the state of Ceará state. We registered 400 plant species and 92 families. The Myrtaceae (36 spp.), Fabaceae (25 spp.), Rubiaceae (20 spp.) and Bromeliaceae (15 spp.) families predominated on the windward slope; while Fabaceae (19 spp.), Myrtaceae (14 spp.) and Euphorbiaceae (11 spp.) were the most abundant on the leeward slope. As we expected, the species richness of trees, shrubs, subshrubs, epiphytes and terrestrial herbs was positively correlated with the altitude (R 2 > 0.60). Above 800 m, we registered 273 species exclusive to the windward slope, 81 exclusive to the leeward slope, and 46 shared species. Therefore, management actions must consider the spatial heterogeneity, distribution and taxa richness.
An ethnobotanical survey was carried out in the Quilombola Community of Serra do Evaristo in the municipality of Baturité, Ceará state, Brazil. We interviewed 41 residents who provided information on the plants used, the types of use, the preparation methods, the purchase location of the plants and their knowledge source. One hundred and fourteen species belonging to 53 botanical families were recorded. Six types of use were reported, with most species being used for medicinal purposes (43% of the species), followed by food (25%), decoration (23%), construction (5%), domestic fuel (3%) and ritualistic purposes (3%). The most cited species were Musa paradisiaca L. (banana), Zea mays L. (corn), Phaseolus vulgaris L. (bean), Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck (orange), Melissa officinalis L. (common balm), Aloe vera (L.) Burm.f. (aloe vera), Cymbopogon citratus Stapf. (lemon grass), Mentha sp.(mint) and Psidium guajava L. (guava). The knowledge and use of the plants is part of a cultural heritage passed down through families, and has been helping the survival and maintenance of the Quilombola identity in the studied community.
The vegetation cover is the result of many biological and abiotic interactions. To identify the different factors that cause changes is crucial when defining future sustainable development and protection of natural resources. In the Brazilian semiarid region, the vegetation cover has been subjected to drastic deforestation and land use at centennialscale that has led to desertification. Pollen analysis is an efficient tool to reconstruct the different processes of degradation of the vegetation cover over time. We built a referential data set for the vegetation cover using 48 pollen surface samples collected in the reservoirs of the Ceará. We used satellite images for comparison with the pollen signatures and defined an alteration score to express the correlation between terrestrial pollen and anthropic cover. Our results showed our surface samples to be generally representative of the vegetation cover and of the general degradation of the landscape. Our study areas can be considered as degraded as the initial categories "preserved" or "intermediary" are not reflected in the pollen assemblages, in agreement with results of botanical surveys and the historical background. The on-going process of desertification is climate-independent and was initiated many decades or centuries ago by intensive land use for agriculture and grazing.
