The productivity of agricultural areas in semi‐arid regions can be improved through the use of irrigation. However, the intensive cropping of such soils can have detrimental effects, especially with regard to soil organic matter (SOM) pools. The goal of this work was to evaluate soil organic carbon and nitrogen stocks of different irrigated agricultural systems and compare these to preserved natural ecosystems adjacent to each of the cropping systems. We selected four cropping systems: banana, a maize/bean succession (MB), pasture (P) and guava (G), as well as areas covered by native vegetation. Stocks of total soil organic carbon (TOC), amounts of unprotected and protected soil organic carbon, carbon and nitrogen in microbial biomass and microbial respiration were quantified. Surface soil TOC stocks under banana, G and P grass were significantly greater than under native vegetation and MB system. The most intensive management system was the MB, and the least intensive systems were P and G. The least intensive cropping systems were grouped on the basis of similarities in TOC, POC, total soil nitrogen and N in microbial biomass stocks. These results show that the degree of soil degradation resulting from changes in land use systems increases with the intensity of the land use systems themselves. This confirms the established hypothesis that the extent of degradation of soil properties and changes in some SOM fractions depend on the intensity of soil use. Furthermore, the adoption of conservation practices may remediate soil degradation and increase SOM stocks, mainly at the soil's surface. Copyright © 2013 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
SUMMARYin the 0-6 cm layer, the percentage of mass loss was highest (300-600 °C) for humic acids in the thermally most stable region. Despite the similarity between infrared spectra, soil fulvic acids in the SILV treatment extracted from 6-12 cm depth decrease the absorption bands at 1708 and 1408 cm -1 followed by an increase in the absorption band at 1608 cm -1 attributed to aromatic C=C groups. This behavior suggests an increase in the aromatic character of the structure. The AGP and ICF treatments, which increase the soil tilling, favored the maintenance of humic substances with a more aromatic character in the soil than SILV and NF. The less aromatic humic substances in the SILV treatment resulted in an increase of exchange sites of soil organic matter, indicating improved nutrient cycling and maintenance of productivity in the system.
Palavras-chave: Chuvas intensas; equação IDF; distribuição de probabilidade; Gumbel ABSTRACTIn this work data sets with 19 e 30 years were used for Pentecoste and Fortaleza -CE, respectively, with the aim to establish a relationship between rainfall intensity, duration and frequency. The theoretical model used was the Gumbel probability distribution. The maximum intensity rainfall was evaluated to 5,10,15, 20, 30, 45, 60, 90, 120, 180, 240, 360, 720 e 1440 minutes using rainfall gauge graphic. The fitted probabilistic model was tested by the Kolmogorov-Smirnov adherence test. The result showed that, the Gumbel model adjusted of data maximum intensity at a significance level of 20% in the all studied durations to Pentecoste station. The estimated values by general equation can show errors up to 40% for the location Pentecoste. This fact confirms the necessity of distinct equations for each return period. The values of probable maximum intensity calculated by developed equation can be used to estimate the rainfall intensity, except for 5 minutes duration in station of Fortaleza, which presented a tendency to underestimated the predictable values.
SUMMARYIn the semiarid region of Brazil, inadequate management of cropping systems and low plant biomass production can contribute to reduce soil carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) stocks; therefore, management systems that preserve C and N must be adopted. This study aimed to evaluate the changes in soil C and N stocks that were promoted by agroforestry (agrosilvopastoral and silvopastoral) and traditional agricultural systems (slash-and-burn clearing and cultivation for two and three years) and to compare these systems with the natural Caatinga vegetation after 13 years of cultivation. The experiment was carried out on a typical Ortic Chromic Luvisol in the municipality of Sobral, Ceará, Brazil. Soil samples were collected (layers 0-6, 6-12, 12-20, 20-40 and 40-60 cm) with four replications. The plain, convex and concave landforms in each study situation were analyzed, and the total organic C, total N and densities of the soil samples were assessed. The silvopastoral system promoted the greatest long-term reductions in C and N stocks, while the agrosilvopastoral system promoted the smallest losses and therefore represents a sustainable alternative for soil C and N sequestration in these semiarid conditions. The traditional agricultural system produced reductions of 58.87 and 9.57 Mg ha -1 in the organic C and total N stocks, respectively, which suggests that this system is inadequate for these semiarid conditions. The organic C stocks were largest in the concave landform in the agrosilvopastoral system and in the plain landform in the silvopastoral system, while the total N values were highest in the concave landform in the native, agrosilvopastoral and silvopastoral systems.Index terms: carbon sequestration, conservation management, shifting cultivation. 0-6, 6-12, 12-20, 20-40 e 40-60 cm, em RESUMO: ESTOQUES DE CARBONO E NITROGÊNIO DO SOLO EM SISTEMAS AGRÍCOLAS TRADICIONAL E AGROFLORESTAIS NO
