The common bean, Phaseolus vulgaris (L.), is one of the most important sources of protein worldwide, and Latin America is one of the recognized centers of diversity of this species. However, storage of this product after harvest is not feasible because of bruchid attacks. This study determined the accumulated normalized rate of emergence and the daily emergence rate of Zabrotes subfasciatus (Boheman) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae:Bruchinae) in five landrace varieties of common bean (BRL 01, SNA 01, RDR 01, RBC 01, and RBC 13) that occurin southwestern Amazonia. These varieties were selected for this study because they are well-distributed throughout the Amazonian communities. Beans of each variety were infested with 50 unsexed adults, and the insects were removed 13 d after beginning the bioassays. The adult progeny obtained from the feeding substrate were counted and removed every other day after the first emergence, until the end of the emergence period. Differences were observed in the calculated rates of development; however, the time required for development and emergence of the insects was independent. Of the five varieties of bean investigated, we observed that the RDR 01, BRL 01, and SNA 01 cultivars are resistant to Z. subfasciatus; the results indicate that the use of these three varieties can reduce problems associated with bruchid attacks and enable storage of the product after harvesting.

A distribuição de sementes comerciais ameaça erodir o germoplasma local em regiões tradicionais de plantio de feijões-caupi (Vigna unguiculata). O objetivo deste trabalho foi descrever as cultivares locais de feijão-caupi da Resex Alto Juruá e da microrregião Cruzeiro do Sul -AC. Foram conduzidos dois experimentos nos anos de 2011 e 2012, em sistema convencional e, em sistema de plantio em aleias, respectivamente. O delineamento experimental adotado nos experimentos foi de blocos ao acaso com nove tratamentos (cultivares), três repetições por tratamento, parcelas de 12 m 2 e espaçamento de 0,45 m entre plantas e linhas. Foram observados vinte caracteres qualitativos e 21 quantitativos. A análise de variância conjunta dos experimentos apresentou contraste significativo para genótipo, sistema de plantio e interação genótipo/sistema de plantio. A característica qualitativa com maior variação entre os genótipos foi subclasse comercial, seguida da cor do grão, pigmentação da vagem imatura, forma do folíolo apical, cor das folhas e curvatura da vagem. O hábito da planta, tendência a enrolar-se ao tutor, fixação da vagem ao pedúnculo e espessura de parede da vagem não apresentaram diferenças. Dos caracteres quantitativos apenas número de dias até 50% das plantas em florescimento e número de lóculos/vagem não diferiram estatisticamente entre cultivares. Os valores médios para comprimento de vagem, comprimento do pedúnculo, número de vagens por pedúnculo e número de vagens por planta foram baixos, entretanto, o germoplasma coletado apresentou características valorizadas como ciclo precoce, arquitetura adequada da planta além da adaptação ao plantio em várzeas. Description of local cowpea cultivars from the microregion of Cruzeiro do Sul, Acre, Brazil ABSTRACTLocal varieties of cowpea beans (Vigna unguiculata) are exposed to genetic erosion due to the introduction of commercial seeds. The aim of this study was to describe local germplasm of cowpea beans from Resex Alto Juruá and microrregion of Cruzeiro do Sul, Acre, Brazil. Two experiments were conducted either using the conventional agricultural system (in 2011), or in an alley cropping system (in 2012). The experimental was a randomized block design with nine treatments (cultivars) and three replicates per treatment. The plots were 12 m 2 in size and rows were 0.45 m apart. Twenty qualitative and 21 quantitative characters were observed. The combined analysis of variance showed significant effects for genotype, agricultural system and for the interaction genotype/agricultural system. The qualitative trait with greater variation among genotypes were the commercial subclass according to the classification adopted by the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture, followed by grain color, immature pod pigmentation, apical leaflet shape, leaf color and pod curvature. The availability of single assai palm (Euterpe precatoria) seedlings with good quality is a fundamental requirement to expand the cultivation of the species. This study aimed to assess the use of fruit agro-industry residues as substrate for producing single assai seedlings. The experiment was carried out under nursery conditions, in a completely randomized design, with four replications and eight plants per plot. Fifteen treatments were evaluated: a commercial substrate, four dry and crushed agro-industrial residues (Brazil nut shell, acerola pit, assai pit and cupuassu peel) and ten combinations of these materials in the proportion of 1:1. The following variables were also measured: shoot height; stem diameter; number of leaves; shoot, root and total dry mass; and Dickson Quality Index score. The substrate formulated with Brazil nut shell + acerola pit stood out for promoting a higher growth and dry biomass, resulting in seedlings with a better quality. The pure assai pit residue was not efficient for producing seedlings, but it showed a good potential when mixed in equal proportion with other materials (e.g. Brazil nut shell and cupuassu peel).

ABSTRACT. Interspecific hybridization between Napier grass (Pennisetum purpureum), which is widely grown in Brazil for cattle forage, and pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum) has been used as a breeding strategy for the development of improved cultivars. However, the hybrid between these two species is sterile due to its triploid condition (2n = 3x = 21 chromosomes), which hinders its use in crop breeding programs. It is known that genomic alterations result from the hybridization process. In order to measure the loss of DNA during embryo development, we used flow cytometry to estimate the nuclear DNA content of triploid and tetraploid embryos produced by interspecific hybridization between Napier grass and pearl millet. The triploid and tetraploid hybrids had a mean DNA content of 4.99-4.87 and 5.25-4.84 pg, at 10 and 30 days after pollination, respectively. The mean reduction in DNA content was higher in the tetraploid hybrids. The flow cytometry results revealed progressive genomic instability in these triploid and tetraploid hybrids, with this instability causing significant alterations in the DNA content of the hybrids.
