ABSTRACT:In the literature about Mattoso Câmaras work, there is practically no reference to his studies in syntax. The purpose of this article is to show that the author has also worked in Portuguese syntax in all its extension. His considerations concerning simple and complex clauses are deeply stimulating and, considering his predominantly formalist approach, they cannot be interpreted as a simple retaking of the traditional view. KEY-WORDS: Syntax; Close and loose relations; Necessary and free relations.RESUMO: Na apresentação da obra de J. Mattoso Câmara Jr., não há praticamente referência aos seus estudos sintáticos. O objetivo deste artigo é mostrar que o autor também se preocupou com a sintaxe portuguesa em toda a sua extensão. Suas considerações relativas ao período simples e composto são profundamente estimulantes e, pelo enfoque predominantemente formalista, não podem ser interpretadas como simples retomada da visão tradicional.
