<p>Em 14 de março de 2018, a vereadora negra e ativista feminista Marielle Franco (PSOL-RJ) foi brutalmente assassinada no centro do Rio de Janeiro. Marielle ficou conhecida por encampar a luta pelas mulheres lésbicas e negras, além de denunciar a violências nas comunidades e a falta de segurança pública, que leva milhares de jovens negros a morte no Brasil. Após a sua morte, chama à atenção a onda de notícias falsas propagadas nas redes sociais para comprometer a imagem de Marielle, acusando-a de envolvimento com o crime organizado e uso de drogas. Este artigo se insere no contexto dos estudos das <em>fake news</em>, disseminadas com grande frequência nas redes sociais. O trabalho visa a oferecer um contributo de reflexão, apontando dados e sistematizando aspectos ligados ao fenômeno das redes sociais, com o objetivo de analisar as notícias falsas que abordam questões raciais e de gênero, como instrumento para responder se ainda persiste um abismo racial no Brasil, supostamente mascarado pelo discurso democrático. Também apontará com as redes sociais atuaram na constituição de um ativismo em torno da morte de Marielle Franco.</p>
